Norway competed at the Olympics of 1900, and has since missed only the 1980 Olympic Games. The nation has also competed at every Olympic Winter Games. Until 1984, Norway could claim to be the top nation at the Olympic Winter Games in terms of medals and gold medals won. In that year, however, the Soviet Union surpassed Norway in both categories. With the demise of the Soviet Union, Norway again topped the list of most medals won by a single country at the Olympic Winter Games through 2022, with 408 medals, 148 of them gold. Norway shares withLiechtenstein andAustria the unusual distinction of having won more medals in the Winter Games than in the Summer Olympics.
Cross-country skierMarit Bjørgen won 15 medals and eight gold medals representing his country. BiathleteOle Einar Bjørndalen won 13 medals with eight golds, followed by cross-country skierBjørn Dæhlie, with 12 medals and eight gold medals. Bjørgen’s 15 medals is an absolute Winter Olympic record (through 2022), while the eight golds won by all three are also a record through 2022.
Norway’s top Winter sports have been cross-country skiing (129 medals, 52 gold), speed skating (87 medals, 28 gold), biathlon (55 medals, 22 gold), Alpine skiing (40 medals, 11 gold), ski jumping (36 medals, 12 gold), and Nordic combined (35 medals, 15 gold). Norway leads the Olympic Winter Games medal lists in biathlon, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, and ski jumping, and is third in speed skating. Norway has been the top nation at an Olympic Winter Games multiple times – 1924, 1928, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1968, 1994 (medals only), 2002 (gold only), 2014 (gold only), 2018 and 2022. They have been second both in terms of medals and gold medals win in 1932 and 1998.
Until 2022, at the Summer Olympics, Norway has won a total of 157 medals and 59 gold. ShooterOtto Olsen leads the medal table, with eight medals and four golds. The gold medal count is led by another shooter:Ole Lilloe-Olsen, with five gold and one silver from 1920 to 1924. The most successful non-shooter Norwegian Summer Olympian was canoeistKnut Holmann, with six medals and three gold from 1992-2000.
Norway has twice hosted the Olympic Winter Games, in1952 in Oslo and in1994 in Lillehammer.
