Description

Ghana first appeared at the Olympics in 1952 under its colonial name, Gold Coast. It did not attend the 1956 Olympics, but competed from 1960 through 1972 under its current name. After boycotting the 1976 and 1980 Olympics, Ghana has attended the Olympic Games from 1984 through Tokyo 2020. Ghanian athletes have won five medals at the Olympic Games.

Through 2022, the best performance by a Ghanian athlete has been achieved byIke Quartey, who won a silver medal in 1960 light-welterweight boxing. Their men’s football team won a bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and three boxers,Prince Amartey,Eddie Blay andSamuel Takyi, have also won bronze medals.

In 2010, England-bornKwame Nkrumah-Acheampong, known as “The Snow Leopard”, competed in Alpine skiing in Vancouver, the first appearance by a Ghanaian athlete at the Winter Olympics. The nation has also entered lone athletes at the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics, withAkwasi Frimpong in 2018 men’s skeleton, and Alpine skierCarlos Mäder in the 2022 giant slalom event. “The Snow Leopard” achieved the best position for his nation in his appearance, a 47th position among 101 competitors.
