Born as József Eisenhoffer, he started football with BTC. In 1917 he moved to Kispest, where he played five seasons and won a silver medal in 1920. In 1922 he joined FTC, but in the first season he played in Makkabi Brünn. In the 1923/24 season, he played at FTC and became a silver medalist. Between 1920 and 1924, he played eight times with the Hungarian national team and scored seven goals. Under the name of Aczél he was a member of the 1924 Paris Olympics squad.

In 1924 Aczél joined Hakoah Wien. Between 1926 and 1931, he played in the United States. In 1931, he returned to Europe and rejoined the Hakoah team in Wien, where he played until 1933. He then moved to Olympique Marseille. In 1935, he became the head coach of the team while still playing, and in 1936/37 led them to the championship. In 1938, he became the coach of RC Lens for a short period of time, but soon returned to Olympique where he finished his career as a player and coach in 1941. He returned to Hungary in the same year and died relatively young in 1945.
