Biography

José Martínez fenced for Mexico for at the 1936 Olympics but he attended college in the United States at Cornell University, where he played football (American) from 1930-32. Martínez also competed in fencing at Cornell. He was a high-level football player, being selected to the 1932 Associated Press first-team All-American team as an end. He also played in the East-West Shrine Bowl at the end of the 1932 season. Graduating in 1933, Martínez then served as a head athletic coach of Mexico’s polytechnical schools for the National Bureau of Education. He also played international polo for Mexico. In 1942 Martínez trained as pilot in Phoenix, Arizona at Southwest Airways school.
