yeah, i agree with a lot of the comments here that the chart has hit a low. there is plenty of good music charting, much better than some other recent years, but it feels like ACR has collapsed in on itself. songs charting for over a year in the top 40 and songs dating back decades thriving on the charts while fresh, new exciting hits reflecting the musical landscape we're in right now, get booted down the charts on their 10th week unless they're a mammoth hit. i hope the OCC do something about this (adopt billboard's recurrent rule in my opinion). not even to be negative, but this is just something that needs fixing and i don't think many disagree.

with that being said, mutt in the top 40 is cute! and love me not entering the top 20 warms my heart. not as fussed about show me love or carry you home. selena and benny managed three entries in the end, that album confused me but i always enjoy what selena brings to pop, it's always interesting to hear. additionally, here for tell me and it isn't perfect returning to the top 40 and hope they can reach new peaks. the giver has also grown on me loads.

A real Mess!!! The UK charts, once the envy of the World, has now been reduced to a joke. The highest new entry No.50???? Is this some bad dream where the same 30 mediocre tracks just keep moving up and down for endless months? It seems so! What a shame. No way should a track be in the top 40 for 73 weeks. Something needs to change!

The UK Singles Chart was the best and most powerful chart in the world for over 50 years but now it's one of the worst. Streaming k*lled the charts in my opinion. I mean of course we'll have to have it cus that's how ppl listen to music now but the fact that anyone can just play anything affects the charts and songs can stay in there for years. I genuinely like in the chart update when smaller bands get in there but when the chart arrives it's not there which saddens me because ACR is not strong enough. Hopefully one day the charts can return to it's former glory but I doubt it will ever happen

It's the first time I have seen comments about how the charts are compiled and the system not working.  I have a solution that is practical and gets rid of ACR completely.  Instead of counting "units" count Retail Sales instead.  What I mean by Retail Sales is the cost per unit to the public. So for downloads you count the 99p (etc) and for vinyl the actual price of each one sold. Same with CDs.  As for streams, they can be worked out by the price paid for a monthly subscription divide by a typical family downloads (currently around 2,000 per month). So a £10.99 subscription at 2,000 would give a stream price of 0,005p per stream.  For add funded streams, this would be much lower.  Say 0.001p a stream.

At the moment, 100 units of CD and 100 of Vinyl and 100 downloads amounts to 300 units.

But 100 CD at £3.99p 100 Vinyl at £10.99 and 100 downloads at 99p as you can see are not the same. But 400 sales equivalent streams would beat the 300 other units.

However, 400 stream units would amount to just £2!

The biggest effect would be the albums.  For example, a £27.99 vinyl selling just 10 copies would produce £279.90 of sales.

Currently, if you buy a CD, download, or vinyl, or any format that is physical, you can affect the chart. But no matter how many times you stream a record, you don't have any effect on sales, unless several other people do the same!  The Retail Sales Chart would stop that

2,073 digital downloads of Alex amount to £2,052.27p at 99p. For example, (OCC figures).

The Streams on Spotify would give Alex £20,978.12p

The 100 position on Spotify currently gives a sale of just £3,440.03p.

Of course, these are based on one streaming rate of £0.005p.  As Spotify probably combines free streams, these would need to be separated.  The other streaming sites don't give figures, but the OCC will know these.

        I don’t comment here much anymore (I also haven’t made a full chart in 2 weeks 😭) but here’s a few thoughts

        - Well, Ordinary held the #1 as expected. I just wish this was Born Again doing this instead, the quality difference is insane.

        - Speaking of Alex Warren, he gets his 2nd UK top 10 hit with Carry You Home. Honestly I’m not that mad with this, it really grew on me even if some of the lyrics are.. questionable.

        - FUFN becomes JADE’s 2nd song to have multiple weeks on chart! This is a pretty good sign and very positive, it’s my favourite song of hers now.

        - Selena & Benny have a bit of impact after all. I haven’t heard any of the debuting tracks this week but I really hope Bluest Flame can become a hit. While it very much just sounds like a Charli xcx scrap (I’m aware she Co-wrote it), Selena actually fits scarily well on it and I think it has potential.

        - The Troye Sivan remix of Physical by Dua Lipa was officially released! Although the original is obviously better, the remix is fantastic and I hope it could potentially allow it to re-enter the chart!

The ACR system does work. I know a lot of people are upset that songs like Beautiful Things (4) are getting such impressive chart hold given their age, but if it is popular then it should just stick high up. There's no reason why older songs can't stay in the chart if they're still popular. Yes - things were out of hand when Sabrina Carpenter consistently occupied the top three spots, but that's harmless compared to what the charts were like without the three-song rule and ACR - Ed Sheeran with the top 10 all to himself! My only criticism of the ACR system is the almost inability for older songs to "escape" ACR - they have to almost double popularity. This percentage should be lowered - but otherwise the system is pretty cool!

it’s about time the charts get an overhaul. the acr thing is backfiring. pink pony club, beautiful things, carry you home, please please please, die with a smile, birds of a feather, lose control, good luck babe, sailor song, guess, not like us and the door have been out for ages now and they’re still prominent in spotify playlists, algorithms etc. i like some of the songs mentioned but the uk needs a recurrency-like rule like what the hot 100 has, otherwise we probably wouldn’t be seeing beautiful things at number 4 on its 62nd week.

100% agree, i hope the OCC are open to a more effective rule change to a recurrency system. it pains me to see billboard hot 100 being a much more accurate representation of what's popular in their country when they literally count radio play as a main factor of popularity but even so, they're wiping us with the recurrency rule. beautiful things' 62nd week at #4 wouldn't be such a problem - as it is a huge song - if other songs like denial is a river, push 2 start etc weren't brutally shoved down the charts on their 10th week while songs from the 1980s-2010s sit comfortably above them. ACR is so obviously ridiculous and thinking of anyone not from the uk looking at this chart cringes me out.

ordinary isn’t great, but ill take it over anxiety. all that song does is get worse and worse for me, and im a doechii fan! why have we let that become the hit and not bullfrog or catfish?

dark thoughts and show me love are decent but i can see myself getting bored of them with time.

love me not, mutt and back to friends are great songs and i hope they climb further.

i have no idea what feel it is doing back, but it’s absolutely welcome - one of my favourite chart songs of 2024.

i remember august 2023 where, after only knowing my chemical romance’s big songs, i did a deep dive and got hyperfixated. they became my favourite band, and i’ve always wanted to experience that feeling again. ladies, gentlemen, and everyone in between, it’s happened again. this time, it’s bad omens.

ive gotten myself so obsessed with them to the point that, in only the space of a week, they’re already my second-most streamed artist of 2025 so far, only less than 10 streams behind tyler, the creator. i even thrifted a tour tee that just came through the mail today!

so the return of my “12 songs a week” shtick will be a bad omens special:

        • take me first
        • miracle
        • like a villain
        • artificial suicide (unzipped) (hot take: i kinda prefer this cyberpunk-y version to the og)
        • running in circles
        • mercy
        • exit wounds
        • the worst in me
        • anything > human
        • hedonist
        • the grey
        • just pretend (it’s their most popular by far, but also check out the live version because there’s a hidden acoustic version in the track too)
        • burning out

How have we managed to be in a situation where the song that was #1 this time last year is still the fourth biggest song in the country? 😐

Anyway, ‘Mutt’ ended up 33 places higher than it did in the midweek update. Glad to see it as it’s such an addictive yet chill slice of R&B, although a remix with an abuser definitely wasn’t necessary.

Other than that, I’m liking the return of ‘It Isn’t Perfect But It Might Be’ and the jump for ‘Show Me Love’ is fine.

radio play is the US' version of acr lol, that's what's ruining their charts. shame because their spotify top 50 is always far more fresh than ours but songs only debut in the top 10 over there with like 70 million radio units first week its ridiculous

Sad to see ‘Headlock’ on ACR this week but at least it didn't exit the chart altogether. Besides, a fantastic song from the mid-2000s getting such a big resurgence so long after its release was incredible to see. :)

It’s also a shame that ‘People Watching’ fell victim to it but I’m happy that it became another very successful hit for Sam.

Yeah… the Jack Harlow and Doja Cat collab did absolutely nothing for me.

The latter brings a bit of a charisma, but the former sounds completely uninterested and that kills any chemistry between the two of them. It’s frustrating because Jack’s latest studio album showed off his rapping abilities rather well, whereas it feels like he’s had all that energy and groove sucked out of him here.

The Playboi Carti tracks didn’t hold up at all this week, although it’s a shame that JADE is collapsing with them. Surprised that Sleep Token got another week in the Top 40.

It seems like neither of Morgan Wallen’s new releases made any impact at all. Honestly, given his reckless attitude and the fact that there are much better mainstream country artists, I can’t exactly complain about it.

Honestly, this week wasn’t very good for the charts in general. You know things are stale when we don’t have a single debut in the Top 40. The highest new entry is at #50.

their “lowest point” for this decade for me was this time in 2021. one of the worst years for chart music in recent memory, just chock-full of uninteresting, bland dance-pop with no identity, and ed sheeran was everywhere. olivia rodrigo saved it a little at least

yeah 2016 didn’t have much going for it in terms of the charts. looking back, some of the songs sound dated compared to where their respective genres are at now. but hey, at least that year gave us frank ocean’s blonde!

2016 was cute in my opinion! i liked the trend of dancehall influence, one dance was a great hit (aware not many agree with that) and i liked most the other number 1s. 2021 on the other hand was painful. i had to check out of looking at the charts most that year because it was just dire. just plain headachey dance music, cringe lockdown songs and ed sheeran. only good part of the charts that year was dave and adele. which is ironic because most of my favourite albums from this decade came out that year, they just didn't make much chart impact here.
