Alright guys, I suppose I'll post my Top 5 favourite songs of the year so far, and my top 5 least favourites.
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Favourites:

        5) I'm Outta Love - Anastacia
This song is incredible, read No.2 to find out why.

        4) Goodbye's Been Good To You - Teddy Swims
Lyrics are great, song's great, beat's great, Teddy's great. What is there left to say? This needs to be on the charts.

        3) Gone - Kelly Clarkson
This track hits hard. It is so incredibly catchy and is a very underrated tune. It's a shame 'Since U Been Gone' and 'My Life Would Without You' completely trampled it when the album released.

        2) Love Is Alive - Anastacia
This track isn't very well known, as it came out in 2000 and has only amassed 74,000 views on YouTube, but it is an incredible song and it is by an incredible person. I truly believe that Anastacia has the most phenomenal voice on the planet, and she is a fighter, going through breast cancer twice and still continuing. Anastacia is an icon.

        1) Lose Control - Teddy Swims
I have no idea how you people don't like this song. It gives me goosebumps every single time he says "Control". This has been my favourite since March and will continue to be.

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Worst:

        5) Forget About Us - Perrie
It's a decent song, it's just very overplayed. I personally listen to Heart Radio, and it seems that every single time I put it on, this song haunts me. I can't escape it. It's practically a curse at this point.

        4) Stick Season - Noah Kahan
Similar to Perrie, this song is also overplayed. Unlike Perrie, this song is awful!

        3) TEXAS HOLD 'EM - Beyonce
The cowboy songs were all spawned from this. This song not only is repetitive, has weak vocals, and an awful backing track, but half of the time I have literally no idea what she is saying!

        2) Man! I Feel Like A Woman - Shania Twain
I don't like Shania Twain because once even a singular second of any of her songs are played, they replay in my brain for at least a week. This song isn't even good though, and I don't see how it got popular.

        1) That Don't Impress Me Much - Shania Twain
Same reasoning as No.2 except this song is much worse and much more repetitive and sticks with me for twice as long.

modern music isn’t “bad”, you just haven’t found your niche. for me, there’s quite a lot of stuff in the charts that’s bland, soulless and derivative, but there’ll be an absolute banger that enters the charts every few weeks for me, that clicks with me because of how different it sounds compared to everything else. at this point in time my musical roots lay in rock and indie (with a dash of r&b here and there), and a lot of what i listen to doesn’t chart - i like to do my own thing and discover, makes me feel so much better. so i’d recommend discovering more underrated bands and artists so you find your niche.

oh, and this isn’t just the case for modern music too. every music era has its classics and stinkers. trust me, i know

        Chart Review 28/06/24

Guess what guys? I. am. STILL. ON. HOLIDAY. Yeah, no, it's a shock to me too.

Most of you would think I would've melted in a heartbeat due to the crazy hot weather this week, but nope. Still here. I also don't have any time to rave along with my Glastonbury chums, because I couldn't get any tickets. But you knew that already, 'cos no one on this website has any. Thankfully, this week's chart has got back from a hastily cancelled vacation in the Marshall Islands, and with it comes a whole load of new hits for me to decipher and deliver in my own usual, uninteresting, biased style.

But of course, despite all of this, Taylor Swift is still No.1. Kind of. More on that later though.

Anyways, Sabrina Carpenter achieves a 2nd week occupying the Top 2 spots as Please Please Please denies Espresso again, thus continuing her (assumingly deserved) chart dominance to set a pretty good bar for the rest of this summer's anthems. I'm expecting at least 3 Top 10s by the time her album hits in August, providing of course the warm weather doesn't rain on her parade. I don't know why I wrote this down because of course it won't, but like, am I wrong to make predictions?

Actually yes, because I attempted to guess where someone (you know who you are) would end up this week, and I clearly didn't set the bar low enough. Again, the identity of this singer will be revealed in a while.

Now then. New entries. None in the Top 20, but a whopping EIGHT in the latter half. About time we had an eventful week so let's kick it off with No.21, and the 2nd (more than I thought he'd get) hit for Tommy Richman. Given how many potential 1-hit wonders there could be by the end of 2024 (Myles Smith, Dasha, Shaboozey), it's nice to see one of these contenders break their duck, and given MILLION DOLLAR BABY has snuck back into the Top 10, it's clear that old Tommy is having a right old laugh at us at this moment in time. Admittedly, DEVIL IS A LIE isn't that much cop compared to his other hit, but y'know, I don't think that matters right now. Tommy Richman has 2 Top 40 hits. Take a wild guess who hasn't. Go one, take a guess.

That's right, 3 of a Kind. Nah. Only kidding. I don't give one about Babycakes anyway.

Now then, Coldplay. You know them, right? British band, first hit was in 2000, 2 UK chart-toppers, radio staples since the Sydney Olympics, and now 5-time Glastonbury festival headliners when they set foot on stage tomorrow. For now though, here's their new single, and it could've been better. You see, Coldplay lead singles usually tend to be the kind of song that explains why they're such a festival pull. In My Place, Violet Hill, Adventure of a Lifetime, they all rock. Except Magic. That was just tedious. And Higher Power wasn't any better. Unfortunately, feelslikeimfallinginlove is hardly a good omen for upcoming LP Moon Music, and it seems that everyone else has taken note. Because No.25 for a new single is disastrous. Only Shiver (from before they were famous) and Orphans (should've done better than 27 tbh) have peaked lower than this in the great Coldplay 1st single canon. And given the lack of streaming energy, I wouldn't bet the house on this one doing anything in the next few weeks. But you know how British artists are nowadays. One disappointing entry and they're off, forcing us to by copies of things we'll throw in the bin by the time we're done with them, and invading everything on Earth just to get the message across.

Or is that just the General Election? (see pressy's post for more ramblings no one cares about)

No.28 sees Charli XCX watch people look at BRAT, realise how amazing it is, spot that some of the lyrics in Girl, so confusing are linked with Lorde, then invite her along to duet on a new version, and now it's in the chart. Even though Lorde ain't credited. One place below her is the latest TikTok powered hit to creep into the bestsellers, that being KEHLANI by Jordan Adetunji. Given how the actual Kehlani can't get a hit to save her life, this seems slightly superstitious. But I digress. Apparently Bring Me The Horizon singer Oli Sykes suggested that RCA sign up Jordan, even though when hearing this song I have no clue why that is. Maybe if I was 13 I'd get it. But I'm not. I'm 17.

In at 34 is Post Malone, who continues to try and prove that he is the new David Bowie, due to the fact that he can do any old genre. Rap, pop, R'n'B, you name it. Now he's in a country mood for some reason, and the 2nd single from F-1Trillion doesn't add up to much despite how well I Had Some Help did. Maybe it's because that song had Morgan Wallen on it, while new hit Pour Me A Drink has the less-notable Blake Shelton mumbling away wondering why he's in the UK charts. Just don't let Post Malone loose on prog-rock, and we'll be alright. I'd hate to see what he'd do with The Mars Volta. Trying to imagine him covering L'Via L'Viaquez is genuinely the hardest thing in the world to do. Apart from about 10,000 other things of course.

Serenading her way to the top of the albums and FINALLY deposing Tay-Tay from the top is Gracie Abrams, as her 2nd effort The Secret Of Us casually strolls to the album chart summit, making her debut's No.3 peak from last year some pretty insufficient. Except, of course, there's a catch. You see, there's a song on here called us., which has a certain really popular singer on it (fill in the blanks -> _ay_or S_i_t). Naturally, that person involved clearly didn't want to deny her compatriot from getting the top spot, so she's lent her some goodness gracious generosity. Oh, and us. debuts at 37 to give Gracie Abrams a 2nd hit. Because of course it does.

Also new this week is Ariana Grande nicking Brandy and Monica from retirement to make a new version of one of her Eternal Sunshine tracks, and that's why the boy is mine has shot up to 39, meanwhile sneaking in at 40 is Chappell Roan casually slaying all of us again with Red Wine Supernova, which came out in May 2023 but only now shows its girth. What with HOT TO GO! creeping up to 33 (and getting played on the chart show, so that's good.), and a certain song that me, you, several OCC members, and everyone else on Earth (except mrstarling, but I don't think anyone cares) is loving strolling its way into the Top 10 for the first time, I think it's safe to say that Chappell has made it. Just don't outstay your welcome and we'll be right as rain.

Outside the 40 and Asake f***s it up at 41, not even Central Cee helping him nick his first Top 40 hit. Maybe he shouldn't perform at Brixton Academy after all. 😶‍🌫️ bl3ss and Majestic are on their way up to the detriment of me, Travis Scott forces Mustard to achieve another Top 100 'success', Rudimental's new one doesn't add up to much, 3 Lions plummets to 99 so I think it's safe to say it isn't coming home this year, Fontaines D.C. suddenly end up with a 2nd chart entry, Favourite following hot on the heels of Starburster from a couple months back, and last week I bet that Perrie's second single Tears would debut at either 19 or 31, depending on how many physicals are bought. Yeah turns out I wasn't setting the bar lower because Tears has entered at an utterly inexcusable and insanely pointless 69. Yes, you did in fact just hear that correctly. SIXTY-NINE. Her debut single got to No.10 by the way. Gonna assume her career is down the dumpster then.

Next week isn't much to cheer about unless you are Skepta, Stefflon Don, Camila Cabello, The Kid LAROI, Megan Thee Stallion, Jax Jones, Lil Durk, Bloc Party, Imagine Dragons, Olivia Dean or Headie One. Because you might do well next week, or you might not. It's hard to tell anymore. Here's the stuff you may also care about.

        THE TIER OF AWESOMENESS:

Chappell Roan [7] (Best song of 2024, apart from O-Rod's obsessed, Nothing Matters by The Last Dinner Party, and maybe Cold Reactor from Everything Everything.), Taylor Swift ft. Post Malone [12], Shaboozey [3]

        THE TIER OF COOLNESS:

Chappell Roan [33], Sabrina Carpenter [2], Charli XCX [31], Kendrick Lamar [14] (He performed this at his latest gig. 5 times.) Billie Eilish [15]

        THE TIER OF GOODNESS:

Sabrina Carpenter [1], Tommy Richman [10], Taylor Swift [20], The Blessed Madonna/Clementine Douglas [24], Billie Eilish [5]

THE TIER OF ALRIGHT I GUESS:

Eminem [4], Chappell Roan [40] (Haven't heard it yet, but when I do I will probably be putting this higher.), Coldplay [25], Central Cee ft. Lil Baby [11], Tommy Richman [21], Dua Lipa [36] (At least she headlines Glasto tonight I guess. Beware next week's dreaded PHYSICAL RELEASE though.) Billie Eilish [30], Charli XCX (ft. Lorde I guess because she isn't credited. Also this rating is for the remix, not the original. The original slaps, however.) [28]

        THE TIER OF AVERAGENESS:

Mark Ambor [16], Gracie Abrams ft. Taylor Swift [37], Post Malone/Morgan Wallen [8], Noah Kahan [32], Jordan Adetunji [29], Taylor Swift [13], Teddy Swims [26]

        THE TIER OF DISLIKEY STUFF:

Ariana Grande [39] (Yeah no this is boring can't lie to you.🥶), Myles Smith [6], Hozier [18] (Can every radio station on Earth stop playing this?), Dasha [9]

THE TIER OF NOT VERY GOODNESS:

Post Malone & Blake Shelton [34], Benson Boone [17] (Good at back-flips for some reason.), NewEra [35]

        THE TIER OF AWFULNESS:

Benson Boone [19], Badger [38], David Guetta & OneRepublic [22], Michael Marcagi [23], Teddy Swims [27]

        NEW HITS:

Coldplay - feelslikeimfallinginlove [25] (Not their worst lead single, but by far not the best. Nothing tops Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall.)

Charli XCX - Girl, so confusing [28] (If Lorde didn't sound too alike to Charli I would've liked it more. Sorry...)

Post Malone & Blake Shelton - Pour Me A Drink [34] (Country music is quite boring. Couldn't you tell?)

Gracie Abrams ft. Taylor Swift - us. [37] (It's fine. Beyoncé does the banjo stuff better though.)

Asake ft. Central Cee - Wave [41] (It's pretty good, didn't deserve to miss the 40. Don't get why CC's trying to sound different here, but you do you I guess.)

Perrie - Tears [69] (So THAT'S what happens when Ed Sheeran doesn't write you a song to sing.)

Mustard/Travis Scott - Parking Lot [83] (Guess that explains why it's hard to like Travis Scott I suppose.)

Rudimental & Karen Harding - Bring Me Joy [87] (If I hear another generic dance song that Radio 1 predictably loves I swear to the Lord above. 😤)

Fontaines D.C. - Favourite [95] (Ah, Dublin's greatest hidden secret. Kinda hard to improve on the majesty of Starburster but this will do. Now if only IDLES could dent the Top 100...)

        Now leave me be.

(P.S. I've just finished listening to LCD Soundsystem's set on the Pyramid Stage, and I can officially confirm that they should've gotten more respect than they did at the time. How Daft Punk Is Playing At My House only got to No.29 is a mystery to everyone apart from the people alive on March 6th 2005. I wasn't alive back then.)

I don't know why you're being downvoted. You clearly put a lot of effort into your post (a lot more than I would with current chart music). I'd suggest your own blog or something, but it probably wouldn't get the visibility you do here.

But the real reason I wanted to comment was as someone who was alive in 2005. Simple fact was that the LCD Soundsystem track is ok, but not amazing. I don't remember it getting a lot of airplay and so it wasn't that well known. I would say a lot of the tracks above it I would listen to instead. What's interesting about that chart (https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singles-chart/20050306/7501/) is it's much more diverse genre-wise than now; there is something for everyone, whether it's ballads, rock or dance.

Also, 2005 was the last year that you had to physically buy singles. None of those songs were downloaded or streamed. People had to part with their hard earned cash to get those singles to their chart positions. More people wanted a retro Elvis re-release than LCD Soundsystem, I guess. It was a lot harder back then to get high chart positions and even more so to stay there (though 2005 was nowhere near as bad as the late 90s, where million sellers like "Wonderwall" couldn't make #1).

Don't feel too bad for LCD Soundsystem. If Bowie's "Heroes" only managed #25 too (original 1977 release- https://www.officialcharts.com/artist/19138/david-bowie/). If you came in low, chances are you would not get the radio coverage and just fall down the charts. Even singles that climbed to the top still came in fairly high to begin with.

By the time the next charts come out, the nation will have gone to the polls to vote in the upcoming General Election. There’s no doubt we’ll be looking at a sizable Labour majority, perhaps even a record-breaking one. Let’s be clear, the Tories are facing annihilation, and rightly so, after 14 years of calamity, scandal, and an ongoing war of attrition against society’s most vulnerable; however, Labour are keen to downplay their chances in order to coax as many votes out of the electorate as possible, in the hopes they will attain a so-called “supermajority” which will essentially give them a blank cheque to do whatever they like in government. We shouldn’t give it to them.

Starmer was elected leader of the Labour party following a meticulously coordinated smear campaign and witch hunt against former leader Jeremy Corbyn, with the issue of antisemitism cynically weaponised against him in the name of political opportunism and factionalism. Starmer ran on a left-wing campaign, but since becoming leader he has since reneged on almost every promise he made, and has overseen a dramatic lurch to the right for his party. Since his election, he has consolidated his power, purging members deemed to be on the left of the party, ruling with an authoritarian grip far beyond even what we saw during the Blair years, him and his clique facing accusations of behaving like “playground bullies”, and being “drunk on power”, and showing clear favouritism towards allies of Starmer when dealing with infringements. He has rowed back on crucial campaign pledges, such as nationalising water and energy, and scrapping tuition fees, with the final nail in the coffin being the abandonment of their £28bn greeninvestment pledge. Why not take it from the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequeur herself, Rachel Reeves, who said “a Labour government would not introduce annual wealth and land taxes; raise income tax; equalise capital gains rates and income tax; rejoin the European single market and customs union; change the Bank of England's inflation target and reform its rigid mandate; or take private utilities into public ownership, except for the railways.” This is a woman who has pitched herself as Labour’s answer to Margaret Thatcher, a figure who should be reviled by any party that dares to call itself “Labour” (although they relinquished any claim to that title when they suspended Labour MP Sam Tarry for having the audacity to attend a picket line in support of striking railworkers.) Starmer has also heaped praise on Margaret Thatcher, whichis no surprise given the Thatcherite dogma of “fiscal monetarism” (read: economic illiteracy) is hard-baked into his macroeconomic policy platform, ensuring the ghost of the single biggest enemy tothe British working class of the post-war era haunts both the main parties, and revealing that beneath the veneer they serve the same masters.

There’s his open endorsement of Israeli war crimes in the Gaza strip, refusing to call for a ceasefire until it was politically expedient to do so, and expelling members from the party who dare to speak out about the ongoing genocide, including accusing the Jewish relatives of Holocaust survivors of being “antisemitic”, with one senior Labour source referring to this process as “shaking off the fleas”. There was the Forde report, which concluded that not only were efforts to tackle antisemitism during the Corbyn era thrown off course by coordinated efforts within the party to undermine his leadership, but also that the party operates a “hierarchy ofracism” in the disproportionate attention given to claims of antisemitism at the expense of other forms of racism, such as anti-Black racism, epitomised in the party’s treatment of Diane Abbot for example; and anti-Muslim racism, a form of racism which seems to just be widely accepted and tolerated by the political establishment. And finally, there’s Starmer’s, and particularly Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s defence of privatisation inthe NHS, advocating private sector outsourcing and demonstrating that Labour are all too comfortable with the prospect of selling off our most cherished institution to the highest bidder.

Have I missed anything? Oh, well there was the time Starmer reportedly said he “hates tree-huggers” after a presentation by Shadow Climate Secretary Ed Milliband. Oh, and the fact that he repeatedly parrots transphobic talking points, pledging to remove “gender ideology” from schools and agreeing with Blair that “a woman has a and a man has a ”.

Starmer has shown time and time again that he is all too willing to bend to the demands of big business and the interests of capital, all while inequality in this country skyrockets, while the planet burns as billionaire CEOs drive us towards complete Earth systems collapse, while children in Gaza are massacred.

Labour do not represent us. Vote Green. VoteIndependent. Do not vote Labour on July 4th. Hold them to account; do not give them a blank cheque.

A dictatorship is a bad thing, whether or not you like the party in power. While I want the Tories finally out of power, replacing them with an even bigger majority is not the answer. The voting system urgently needs reform.

It's just like 1997 all over again. Labour have to become appealing enough to the right wing again in order to gain power, because millions of votes are meaningless, either in Labour votes above what is needed for win or third party votes.

I think my ideal result would have been another hung parliament, with Labour forced into a coalition with another party, but it seems unlikely, given the polling. Also, the SNP would likely have to be part of such a coalition and they don't represent most of the country. The whole thing is just a mess.

completely agree that electoral reform is needed, but I also want to see the Tories with as little influence as possible in Parliament, which under the current system would imply a large Labour majority. in an ideal world Labour would instead be held to account by a left-wing party. PR would make that more likely to happen. but as things stand I can't say I want Labour to get fewer seats if those seats are being filled by the Tories

once again i agree! girl, so confusing was already one of my favourite tracks on brat (along with sympathy is a knife and club classics), but this new remix makes it even better. the chemistry between charli and lorde is unmatched.

speaking of charli remixes, can she drop that 365 easyfun remix? for my sake, for her fans sake? it goes so hard!!

speaking of girl, so confusing remixes to be specific… i’m so sorry im still plugging this guy but no mana previewed a remix of it on his instagram and it’s just as good 🔥

I’m glad that ‘Not Like Us’ is sticking around beyond the beef with Drake. It’s honestly one of Kendrick’s most potent hits to date! 🔥

I remember being ecstatic back in the middle of April when ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ debuted on the chart, now it’s officially a Top 10 hit! Congrats to Chappell on her first song to enter the region.

Also, we absolutely won with ‘Red Wine Supernova’ breaking into the Top 40! ❤️

Good to see ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ back in the Top 3 and returning to its peak. Hoping to see this at #1 for at least a week later in the summer! 😊

Thank you! The chart usually updates in full after the Radio 1 chart show finishes, so I come here straight after that to post my analysis.
