        Chart Review 24/05/24

Two things to start off. One, I'm back. Two, Radio 1 needs to stop cancelling the chart show for their stupid Big Weekend thing I'll never go to. Why would I want to attempt to win a contest that's probably rigged in someone else's favour just to go to some outskirt of Britain, like Scunthorpe or Dundee, all to watch some boring artists that would look a lot better on stage at Glastonbury or Reading and Leeds? As if I haven't had Teddy Swims shoved down my throat enough recently!? It just seems like a shoddy way to increase the BBC's bank balances so that we never hear what the Billie-E songs sound like. It's almost as if there's some stupid agenda against modern music. Almost like Radio 1 don't care about the charts anymore?

Sorry, what was I on about again?

Ah yes, the charts. Last week I didn't feel like doing one of these, probably because the college I go to decides to waste my weekends with mountains of homework to endure, but also due to the fact that Eurovision was just a lil' bonkers, ya get me? Aside from the obvious controversy revolving around that country with Jerusalem in it, there was a fan favourite that got DSQed for getting in an altercation with press people, the UK casually receiving yet another walloping from the televoters, more bonkers performances than you can wiggle with your Ukrainian granny to, and a non-binary person winning it for Switzerland. Tough luck for all the petulant and whiny homophobes then. 😅

Also last week, Post Malone almost hit the top the charts by deciding to rope in the biggest country star in the world right now (commiserations Kacey Musgraves), and some dingus called Myles Smith shot into the Top 20 despite sounding like he idolises Rag'n'Bone Man. Which isn't great, I'm sure you're aware. I did see Myles on that Jools Holland show last week (series 64 people!!), and I thought he was alright. Except he wasn't performing Stargazing, and he was desperately wanting to be Michael Kiwanuka. Nothing's better than the original, Myles. Besides, I had more fun with Elbow and IDLES that night.

Anyways, THIS WEEK NOW. And there's a good reason why I capitalised those letters.'Cos it's Billie Eilish's time to shine.

As we all know, when it comes to bored 21st century singer-songwriters that resonate with the teens and hog the Radio 1 playlist, there's no better example than the lady who made a Bond theme once. And a Barbie one. Which, ironically, are her only chart-toppers on these shores. But that's not important. Presumably. Anyhow. Her 3rd studio effort HIT ME HARD AND SOFT hit the streaming services like you'd expect it to since it came out last Friday, and we've seen a progressions of sorts with the song titles. First, it was all lowercase, then it was -> Stylised Like This <- , and now it's ALL CAPITALS BABY WE LOVE THE METS LET'S GO BOYS. Just remove the latter part. There's no clammering for Major League Baseball on this album. It's also not her finest work. There's no real bury a friend's or Happier Than Ever's on here, which is a shame because I want to adore this just like everyone else on the planet, but I just, can't, for some reason. Maybe it's my burning hatred for overlong ballads that puts me off. Guess that's why the average Lana Del Rey song flies over my head.

Naturally, her album's got to the top spot, and the three songs permitted have all become Top 10 smashes, led by easily the best song on the album LUNCH, which has actually deposed Sabrina Carpenter from the top of the Spotify charts today, so clearly this is gonna e massive for the next few months. I mean, she's still No.1 for a fourth week with Espresso, but you don't reallly care about that, right? I'm guessing?

Joining it in the best-sellers are CHIHIRO at No.7 and BIRDS OF A FEATHER at No.9, the three positions on show now meaning she has 12 Top 10 smashes since she first hit the charts in 2018. And I mean, come on, who was gonna stop her from getting the No.1 album. Beth Gibbons? Clavish? That doofus from One Direction? Of course not. Silly chart watchers. 😜

Elsewhere, Tommy Richman belies his chart potential by falling to 5, with Post and Morgan also choosing today to fall into a sinkhole as they plummet to 6. There are other new entries today, so don't immediately abandon reading this because you came her for Eilish analysis. Remember last year when Gunna put out, ahem... f**umean, and saw it rise from humble beginnings into the Top 10? Seems to me that this is gonna happen all over again with his latest chart hit, one of wun moving up to 32 today despite his album having already done it's thing. Not much to add here, apart from the fact that I unironically LOVED f**umean, and this just doesn't do it for me.

Down at 36 we see a 2nd solo success for African superstar Tems, who creeps up the listings with some joint called Love Me JeJe, her target now being to oust that Me & U's No.34 peak from last October. Also breaking through is a song I officially have mixed feelings for. Back in the day, Disturbed were some shouty rowdy angst-fest in the same vein as System of a Down and Avenged Sevenfold, but not as good. Only 1 hit managed to make the Top 40 for them, but they suddenly came into prominence with a cover of Simon & Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence, which went utterly BALLISTIC on the Conan show in 2016, and charged up to No.28. Now out of bleedin' nowhere, the song is suddenly re-energised and moves up to 39. All well and good, but there's just one problem. It's because of possibly the WORST DANCE SONG/REMIX OF THE 2020S. That's saying a lot when the likes of Joel Corry and Nathan Dawe exist. Clearly the people on iTunes giving it high ratings are brainless industry plants, and whoever 'remixed' this track (a guy called CYRIL, if anybody has any suggestions) needs to spend some time in a mental asylum for his crimes against humanity. We did not need a cover of a hit from the 60s by some 00s metal-lovers to be transformed into a Alex Party B-side. Suddenly Benson Boone's songs don't sound that bad to listen to in private. Okay, rant over now.

Moving on with the Top 100 and Teddy Swims' latest is up to 45. At least The Door is slightly better than his other one. Then again, that's not saying much. 6ix9ine is better than Lose Control, so that's an incredibly low bar to clear there. In other news, something's happened that has resulted in The Script's The Man That Can't Be Moved re-entering at 48. Do you know why? Because I sure do not. Luke Combs is back with a soundtrack song, and his recent increase in popularity means he enters at 62, closely followed by Bronski Beat's Smalltown Boy. And no, I still don't have a reason for that song being here. Maybe the TikTokkers are out in force again.

No.78 is a re-working of Celine Dion's 2002 single I'm Alive, and it's as bad as it sounds, Chappell Roan continues her rise to prominence, HOT TO GO! the latest entry for her at 95, and Sonny Fodera kick-starts his attempt to follow-up the monstrous Asking with a new hit at 97. To be fair, that massive smash also started it's chart journey pretty low, so don't think it's the end of the world for Mind Still just yet. Even though it's really boring.

As for next week's entrants, get ready for a classic album chart battle between Twenty One Pilots, Bring Me The Horizon, and the other streaming giants we've mentioned to 'ell and back, and as for the singles, Central Cee returns. Don't care, didn't ask. PinkPantheress has a new song out, Nelly Furtado somehow still has a career, FLO keep trying to stay relevant, NewJeans return with more K-POP noodling, Becky Hill collabs with Self Esteem (wait what?), and speaking of Rag'n'Bone Man, the Ragster himself releases new music for the first time since 2021. Given how the stuff from his 2nd album has virtually been forgotten, I don't expect this to do very well. Maybe he can squeak Top 20, who knows. Who cares. I'm outta here. Peace.

(P.S. You thought the BMTH singles they've released had hard to type spellings. Mate, the album tracklist is hardly any better. liMOusIne. a bulleT w/ my namE On. Top 10 staTues tHat CriEd bloOd. [ost] (spi)ritual. Need I go any further?)

oh yeah alfie! post human: nex gen was pretty good. fav tracks were youtopia, rip (duskcore remix), lost, darkside, dig it, kool-aid and n/a. a bullet with my name on was also awesome but underoath’s part kinda let it down slightly. i hated amen though and skipped to the end of it for the transition. there are some fantastic transitions across the album and one i wouldn’t mind getting a vinyl of for that reason.

apple music just ranked the miseducation of lauryn hill as their best album of all time. i think it’s an awesome pick, i wouldn’t put it first though but it’s still a really really great rnb record. matter fact, there are some absolutely great picks on that list even if my personal fav got snubbed.

that being said, i have to ask, what are your favourite albums of all time? reply in this thread, i wanna see yalls picks, the list can be as long or short as you want :3

At long last, ‘Home’ is finally out of the Top 40 and hopefully for good.

Awesome seeing Disturbed’s cover of ‘The Sound Of Silence’ back in the region for the first time in nearly eight years (although the CYRIL remix would’ve been in the Awful Tier if credited). Well done to Nemo and Tommy Richman for landing upgrades!

‘Saturn’ on ACR and nearly dropping out of the chart is a massive shame… 😔

Given it's charted for 10+ weeks and has moved down in chart position for three consecutive weeks, maybe it'll be on ACR as early as next week and probably out of the chart altogether if it does?

Thank you. I've had a few album requests this week, but I'm off work until Wednesday so will try to get around to it when I can! 😊
