South Carolina Election Results: Live Updates

Gov. Henry McMaster, who succeeded Nikki R. Haley when she resigned to become President Trump’s envoy to the United Nations, survived first the Republican primary and now the general election to win a full term of his own. His Democratic rival, James Smith, struggled to gain traction in the polls, despite the public support of some of his party’s most powerful figures, including former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.

The state is a Republican stronghold in the South — five of South Carolina’s six most recent governors have been Republicans — and voters in the state have shown few signs of discontent this year.

Katie Arrington engineered one of the major upsets of the Republican primary season when she defeated Representative Mark Sanford, a former South Carolina governor, in June. But Democrats and their nominee, Joe Cunningham, turned the tables on her, winning the general election, by persuading voters that Ms. Arrington’s politics are too far right for a district whose outgoing congressman has been a persistent critic of President Trump.
