Participated in a movement to resist governmental intrusions on Native American land. Violence broke out on 26 June 1975 in South Dakota, and Peltier was later brought to trial, convicted, and sent to prison, where he now languishes. But he is active from behind bars: he has helped to create scholarships for indigenous youth, sponsored children in Central America, and even writes poetry.
