Jeff Sessions' appointment to federal judgeship in 1986 was rejected by a US Senate committee because he had made numerous racist statements. The committee had reviewed affidavits from a variety of Justice Department officials, documenting the racist remarks, one of which called a white civil rights attorney "a disgrace to his race" and another where he expressed admiration for the Ku Klux Klan. Among the helpful clarifications Sessions made during the approval process was this gem: "I may have said something about the NAACP being un-American or Communist, but I meant no harm by it." In 2009, Sessions accused Supreme Court nomineeSonia Sotomayor of racism.

Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III was (obviously) named for his father and grandfather. His grandfather was named forJefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, and GeneralPierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, the superintendent of West Point who quit to take command the first Confederate army at Fort Sumter, at the start of the American Civil War.
