- Work cat:Trends, applications, and challenges of chatbot technology, 2023galley (Chatbots, also known as conversational agents, enable the interaction of humans with computers through natural language, by applying the technology of Natural Language Processing (NLP). They can mimic human conversation and entertain users, and can also be useful in various applications including healthcare, education, business, and customer services. Chatbots are of two types: rule based chatbots and AI chatbots. A rule based chatbot will be able to answer only for specific commands and represent a fixed smartness level. An AI based chatbot uses artificial intelligence to understand the commands and natural language. Since machine learning is the ability of a computer to learn based on the past experience without explicitly being programmed for, AI based chatbots will be able to respond to commands/queries. In both the cases, chatbots should be able to recognize similar queries and respond with the same output. Usually chatbots are trained with thousands of logs from human conversations for better performance and intelligence)

A chatbot (originally chatterbot) is a software application or web interface designed to have textual or spoken conversations. Modern chatbots are typically online and use generative artificial intelligence systems that are capable of maintaining a conversation with a user in natural language and simulating the way a human would behave as a conversational partner. Such chatbots often use deep learning and natural language processing, but simpler chatbots have existed for decades. Chatbots have increased in popularity as part of the AI boom of the 2020s, and the popularity of ChatGPT, followed by competitors such as Gemini, Claude and later Grok. AI chatbots typically use a foundational large language model, such as GPT-4 or the Gemini language model, which is fine-tuned for specific uses. A major area where chatbots have long been used is in customer service and support, with various sorts of virtual assistants.
