About
JOHN MILLER was born in Berkeley County, Virginia (West Virginia today), on November 25, 1781. His education was limited and attained in the common schools of his native state. In 1803 he moved to Ohio, where he published the Steubenville Gazette, as well as editing the Western Herald. Miller entered the military during the War of 1812. He served as lieutenant colonel of the 17th U.S. Infantry and later was promoted to colonel of the 19th Infantry. After his military duty, he secured an appointment as register of the land office at Franklin, Missouri, a position he held from 1818 to 1825. Miller was elected governor in an 1825 special election that was held after Governor Bates died in office. He won reelection to a second term in 1828. During his tenure, state expenditures were reduced and the state’s economy flourished. After completing his term, Miller left office on November 19, 1832. Four years later he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, a position he held until 1843. Governor John Miller passed away on March 18, 1846, and was buried in the Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.
