FRANK A. BRIGGS, the fifth governor of North Dakota, was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on September 15, 1858. His education was attained in the public schools of his native state. Before entering into politics, Briggs worked in the real estate and newspaper industries in Minnesota. He first entered politics as treasurer of Morton County, North Dakota, a position he held from 1887 to 1895. He also served as state auditor of North Dakota from 1895 to 1897. Briggs next secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination, and was elected governor by a popular vote in the 1896 general election. During his tenure, a general revenue bill was sanctioned; and a railway regulation law was authorized. During his second year in office, Briggs became ill and passed away on August 9, 1898. Governor Frank A. Briggs was buried in the Howard Lake Cemetery in Howard Lake, Minnesota.
