About
ENDICOTT PEABODY, the sixty-fourth governor of Massachusetts, was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on February 15, 1920. His education was attained at Harvard University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1942, and his law degree in 1948. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy, earning a Silver Star for his courageous service. Peabody entered into a career in public service in 1950, serving as the assistant regional counsel for the Office of Price Stabilization, a position he held one year. He also served as the regional counsel for the Small Defense Plants Administration in 1952, and served as a member of the Governor’s Council from 1954 to 1956. After securing the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, Peabody went on to win election to the governorship in 1962. He was sworn into office on January 3, 1963. During his tenure, an advisory committee on civil rights was established; the public works department was restructured; an open housing law was enacted; and constitutional amendments were sanctioned. After running unsuccessfully for reelection, Peabody left office on January 7, 1965. From 1967 to 1969 he served as the assistant director for emergency preparedness. Governor Endicott Peabody passed away on December 1, 1997, and was buried at the Lawn Cemetery in Groton, Massachusetts.
