About

ALBINUS NANCE, the fifth governor of Nebraska, was born in Lafayette, Illinois, on March 30, 1848. His early education was attained in the common schools of his native state. During the Civil War he served in the Union Army as a private in the 9th Illinois Cavalry. After his military service, he resumed his education at Knox College, where he studied law. He then established his legal career in Osceola, Nebraska. Nance first entered politics as a member and speaker of the Nebraska House of Representatives, a position he held from 1874 to 1878. He also served as chairman of the state delegation to the 1876 Republican National Convention. Nance next secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination, and was elected governor by a popular vote in November 1878. He was reelected to a second term in 1880. During his tenure the Slocumb liquor law was enacted, restricting liquor licensing; railroad construction was advanced; and the state’s economy improved. After completing his term, Nance left office on January 4, 1883, and retired from political life. He returned to his legal practice and worked in the banking and brokerage industries as well. Governor Albinus Nance, who had been known as the “Boy Governor,” passed away on December 7, 1911. He was buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska.
