ThePanama Canalis a 48-mile-longman-made waterwaylocatedin Central America. Itconnectsthe Atlantic and PacificOceansthrough a series oflocks,channels,and artificiallakes.
The canalwas begun by the French in the late 1800s, but thatprojectended infailure. Itbecamethe petprojectofPresident Theodore Roosevelt, and Americanconstructionon thecanalbegan in1904. But progress was slow and dangerous, and the threat ofdiseases such asyellow feverand malariaterrified theworkers.
However, in 1907,work on thePanamaCanalfinally began to take off.Yellow feverhad largely been eradicated, living conditions had improved (mainly for whites), and therailwaysfor removing dirt had been finished.
In January1914, thefirst unofficial ship sailed through thecanalfromoceantoocean, and on August 15,1914, the canalofficiallyopened. Itscompletionwas afeat of engineeringand highlighted America’s emergence as a major player on the world stage. Thecanalalso reshapedworld tradeand travel by greatly reducing the time it takes for ships to cross between the Atlantic and Pacific.
ThePanama Canalremained in American hands until December 31,1999, whencontrolwashanded over toPanama. Anexpansion projectwascompleted in 2016.
