and Sun Airs Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Thursday, June 3, 1993 TV NOTES KDKA, WPXI win six awards in state contest From staff wire reports LOCAL AWARDS: Pittsburgh television stations won six awards in an annual competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters. The prizes were equally split between KDKA and WPXI. KDKA took honors for best editorial (by commentator Sally Kalson, also a Post-Gazette columnist), for best spot news coverage and for best sportscast. WPXI won for bext local sporting event, best program series for children and best public-service announcement about drugs and drunk driving. The PAB hands out awards in 15 categories.
Three awards are given in each category to stations in big, medium and small markets. HILLARY SPECIAL: "Hillary: America's First Lady," to air June 10 on NBC with Katie Couric as anchor, will explore how Hillary Rodham Clinton is redefining the role of first lady, developing the new health-care plan and juggling responsibilities. The program also will provide viewers with an inside look at the White House, including a rare view of the second-floor private residence. Couric will ask Clinton about public reaction to her White House role, including her influence on her husband's decisions and in other matters affecting the Clinton administration. better than winning the May sweeps, except maybe throwing a good party, which is what NBC President Robert Wright did for more than 1,000 employees at the network's 30 Rockefeller Plaza headquarters in New York Tuesday.
Wright and, by satellite from Burbank, NBC West Coast President Don Ohlmeyer spoke briefly and showed off a brief preview of this fall's new NBC shows, and then Wright and NBC News' Jane Pauley did the honors awarding free NBC caps, T-shirts and other such items to lucky ticket holders. PARTY TIME: There's nothing TV GAME: Vin Di Bona, who gave us ABC's "America's Funniest Home Videos" and "America's Funniest People," has come up with a live-action Nintendo TV game for CBS called "Storm the Castle" that is set, for now, for a one-time showing June 16. The show features family teams who hop, skip and jump their way through obstacles. In all, 30 family teams are whittled down to the few who try to "Storm the Castle" for a $15,000 prize. Penn Teller bring magic touch to "Monster Vision" By Jean Prescott Biloxi Herald Penn Jillette says he and fellow funnyman-magician Teller took the June long "MonsterVision" job on TNT because "it was important for us to do this. Fans of good-ol' bad-ol' monster movies and TV series will be able to join dynamic duo in a feast of 14 different films, nine best-of episodes of the '60s series "The Outer Limits" and, on Saturday, June 26, the premiere of TNT's original "Frankenstein. The fun starts at 8 p.m. and goes on until the wee morning hours every Saturday night in June. Penn Teller, eager to hype their monster month, are calling from London where they've been taping a series for British television.

"I get into the cab, we go a little ways and there's this traffic jam. The cabbie gets out to look and then reports back that it's the queen blocking traffic. When I got a little testy, he turned on me and said, 'Well, at least she's not getting a flipping haircut, "What am I doing here?" Penn says in mock dismay. "My president is back home making headlines with haircuts, and I'm in a foreign country." Penn, whose background is rural Massachusetts, and Teller, an urban kid from Philadelphia, met in the spring of 1974. At the time, Teller, the elder by seven years, was teaching high school Latin in New Jersey, and Penn, by his own description a geeky long haired kid, had just graduated high school.
They made their debut as an act at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival in the summer of '75, and over the next few years, they performed as the Asparagus Valley Cultural Society, a trio that also included the fellow who had introduced them. "He was sane, sensible and funnier than either of us," Teller confesses, "but he wanted a life." They swear that they watched every scrap of film and tape TNT will air, "but we didn't watch together. We do have separate lives," Penn says. "I watched over three or four weeks, but after the first three or four nights, I lost all of my friends.
