A safety in the first quarter put Texas Christian ahead and the Horned Frogs came from behind with one touchdown in the second period and another in the third. Jack Archer took a handoff from Lindy Berry and went 29 yards for Texas Christian's first touchdown, then two plays, atter Oklahoma's second tally, ry cut loose with a 71-yard scoring run--the finest individual exhibition of the game. Oklahoma's terrific power ate up 360 yards on the ground. A hardcharging line led by guard Paul Burris held the Frogs' to 189.
Darrell Royal fumbled in his own end zone in the first three minutes of play and the ball hit the goal post to give Texas Christian an automatic safety. With less than a minute left in the game, the Horned Frogs got another automatic two points. Jack Mitchell, trying to kill time, ran back to his own end zone, then when he tried to get out slipped and fell. Mitchell, George Thomas and Pearson were Oklahoma's stand outs while it was Berry, end Billy Moorman and big Pete Stout who glittered in the Frog lineup. Stout set up TCU's first touchdown with a 41-yard gallop to the Oklahoma 35.
Oklahoma moved 60 yards in eight plays for its second touchdown Mitchell, Thomas and Pearson bearing the brunt of the drive. It took the Sooners just ten plays to move 76 yards for their second tally. A fourteenyard pass from Mitchell to Jimmy Ownes-the only pass Oklahoma attempted-ate up 14 yards in the march. (AP) The Texas Longhorns sputtered against a strong defense for two periods Saturday, then struck for three last half touchdowns to defeat Rice's Owls, 20 to 7. An overflow crowd of saw Rice push the highly favored Longhorns around two periods and take a 7-0 lead before Texas started moving on the ground and air midway of the third period. A 53 yard drive knotted the score at 7 7 and it began to appear the teams would battle to the first draw in the history of the 35-year-old Southwest conference classic. Wolverines Rally, Plaster 001 Gophers To 27-14 Tune Knocks Minnesota Out Of Rose Bowl Pre-Tilt Contention Minneapolis (AP) Undefeated Michigan's best-in the nation Wolverines twice came from behind yesterday to smother ponderous Minnesota, 27-14, and knock the Gophers out of Rose Bowl contention. A record crowd of 65,130 packed Memorial Stadium for the game. The tricky Wolverines, ing to their 19th straight victory, spotted the brawny Gophers a 7-0 lead in the second period and a 14-13 edge in the third quarter, but nonchalantly shoved across two more touchdowns to settle the "Little Brown Jug" classic. Wolverines, rated the nation's best in the weekly Associated Press poll of sports editors, scored two touchdowns in each in the third and fourth periods for a triumph which further enhanced thier prospects of grabbing a second straight Big Nine title.
The brusing Gophers played brilliant football but were no match for the opportunish Wolverines, who counted on three payoff passes and a scoring plunge after a blocked Minnesota punt landed on the Gopher 1-foot line. The Wolverines, who are excluded from a second straight Rose Bowl trip, won their fifth consecutive game this season with a consistent display of trickery and cagey football. (AP) Michigan State's battle toughened Spartans gave unbeaten Penn State the scare of the season and a banner home coming crowd an incurable taste of jitters Saturday. The final score was 14 to 14, preserving Penn State's unbeaten record for 14 games. But any way you look at it, this thriller was a game that Michigan State could have won and might have won but for bad luck and a desperate lastditch defensive stand.
Twice the home team had to come from behind to tie the score. Twice Michigan State runners crossed the goal line- on a 100 yard dash with an intercepted pass just as the first half ended-only to be called back. And four times in the final quarter Penn State turned back the furiously charging Spartans inside their own 25 yard line. This score was made possible by Lyle Koontz' 51-yard ramble. Not since beating Wyoming, 75-0, in 1912, had Colorado scored so many points. They did it with Narcisian and many other first stringers riding the bench all through the last half. Dane Graves added to the rout a minute later, scoring after taking a punt in midfield. Okla City, Kelly Debusk, lieves there might be less laws if Oklahoma sportsmen's Healdton and Wilson clubs down Members of those clubs this week announced that they would pay a $25 reward for information leading to the arrest of any persons hunting quail in closed season.
The two clubs, which did extensive work last winter and spring in building wildlife feeding stations and restocking their local hunting fields, posted the reward when rumors of preseason quail shooting were heard in their areas. The quail season will be open November 20-January 1, inclusive, with shooting permitted only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, DeBusk said. Duck Hunters Note Large concentrations of waterfowl, ducks, coots, and gulls, have been noted by state game rangers that past week on Holdenville, Canton salt Plains and ponds, too, are harboring a least a smattering of ducks. All of which indicates that Oklahoma hunters may expect at least a fair amount of shooting when the waterfowl season open Friday noon, October 29. Good general rains over the state, sufficient to put water in the potholes, and sloughs, are needed in order to bring the ducks in enmasse and hold them here, said Kelly DeBusk, state game and fish director.
Deer Hunt Opens Oklahoma deer hunters preparing for their annual trek to the the state's southeastern mountainous section where the one big game hunt of the year will be staged November 8-13. Gunners are permitted to use only hipowered rifles of 25 caliber or larger, and to shoot soft nosed bullets only. Deer are more plentiful than in other years, and a heavy crop of acorns and other natural footstuff has fattened the animals and put them in good condition, according the state game rangers in the area. A number of rangers from outside districts are patrolling the deer woods in a pre-season check of hunting conditions and to curb any hunters who may attempt to jump the gun, state game and fish department officials announced this week.
Deer hunting licenses and complete printed regulations are available this week at the game and fish department offices at the state capitol. Game Exhibit An estimated 100,000 visitors viewed an exhibit placed by the state game and fish department at the Made-In-Oklahoma Exposition at Oklahoma City's municipal auditorium last week. The display included live quail from the state game farm, a model quail coop, sound movies stressing wildlife conservation, poster materials depicting the state's fish management techniques, as well as data on where Oklahoma ranks among the 48 states as a hunting and fishing area. Ohio State Clips Wisconsin 34-32 Columbus, Ohio (P) In one of the most hair raising games ever staged in Buckeye Stadium, Ohio State came from behind twice Saturday to nose out a "fired up" Wisconsin eleven, 34 to 32, before 77,205 fans. The Bucks, blocked on the ground by the Badger forward wall, took to the air lanes for all five of their touchdowns. Wisconsin stayed on the ground for its five markers.
The point after touchdown department decided the issue, the Bucks getting four of five while the Badgers converted only two. Determined to win this one for harassed coach Harry Stuhldreher, and to turn those 'Goodbye Harry" signs into "Good Boy Harry," the invaders started explosively by shoving over two touchdowns in the opening period. Mrs. Zaharias subdued the Arkansas champion, Betty McKinnon of Mt. Pleasant, 5 and 4 in a semi-final match Saturday, and Miss Berg defeated Mary Agnes Wall, Menominee, 4 and 3. Neither finalist had too much trouble winning Saturday.
Mrs. Zaharias finished the first nine two up and Miss Berg turned three up. Miss McKinnon, upset conqueror of Peggy Kirk, Findlay, in the quarter-finals, managed to halve the first two holes with the Babe. But after she went one down on three, her game immediately suffered. Trying hard, Miss McKinnon took the eighth hole on a 20- yard chip shot to the lip of the cup.
But the Babe's shooting under pressure was too much. In the woods on 10, she blasted out for an almost unbelievable par, and on 11 went out of bounds, but birdied the hole by dropping a chip shot from 30 yards out. Miss Berg had a persistent opponent in Miss Wall but the Menominee Miss had too much trouble with her short game to make it close. Patty took two holes with bogies on the first nine and after turning, twice shot out of trouble nicely to end it on the 15th. The Irish, swinging through their 23rd game without a defeat, used their ground forces almost exclusively against an Iowa team fired with a determination to repeat Hawkeye triumphs here in 1921 and 1939. Notre Dame, off to a sizzling start on John Panelli's 34-yard touchdown run on the first scrimmage play, struck in the air only eight times and completed once.
The Irish actually had a net loss of seven yards with aerials. But their rugged thrusts behind characteristic crisp Irish blocking mowed down the Iowa defenders for four touchdowns, one in each quarter. Iowa lacked the power to successfully counter-charge but the Hawks gave it a terrific try.
