TUESDAY, AUGUST 11, 1931 ILLUSTRATED DAILY NEWS NINETEEN I Constance Bennett in 'Bought' Here Thursday Juarez Is Gay at Night Beer At 5 Cents Many Tourists Fly There By ELEANOR BARNES ECUERDO JUAREZ! As if anyone could help remembering Juarez on the Rio Grande! Chihuahua's pride, by day, is a droning, sleepy Mexican city, 15 minutes removed from the heart of El Paso, but MONDAY WASHING? -Not al Senorita Garcia is preparing to do the family baking. 'She proposes to roll 'out some dough into tortillas, the thin Mexican "staff of life," which is a cross between a pancake and a French roll. tempo, people and language. sultry day in Juarez-inthat growled from the pipes the gateway metropolis. plied the muddy calles proclaiming the events.

Julian Rodarte, Agustin Garcia Barrera and Lorenzo Garza were to gore dashing Spanish bulls from the new Alvarrada herds, on the morrow; the bulls were on display down near the old Mission San Lorenzo, which, by the way, is in process of repair from bullet gouges made when Mexico routed the Cath-' olic priests some time ago. THE PRIZE The "Gold Ear," worth $200 American money, was on display at a big curio store, and the crowds clustered around to size it up. Nearby in the Gold Palace, Tiny was the big attraction. Where beer sells for 10 cents a glass (because there is cabaret entertainment also), Tiny shook her 400 pounds net to Hawaiian music until the lei around her neck grew wet and faded as the perspiration rolled down the broad brown expanses of her chest. Tiny is the pride of Juarez.

GREAT STUFF Then there was Charlie Lama, next door, the greatest card dealer of them all. Charlie's fame is worldwide and the way he flicks the pasteboards to "the sweeteners" in his $5 ante sittings draws full houses to the gambling palace where he functions. OPPORTUNITY One could go on indefinitely reciting observations in the picturesque town of Juarez, but one should take a trip down there, a delightful one from Los Angeles. When I think of the many week-ends squandered in the past- -week -ends that might have been as glorious as the last one--it makes me wonder why I haven't read advertisements 1 more carefully. Saturday morning at 6:15 o'clock the giant tri-motor American Airways passenger mail plane taxied off the United Airports' Burbank field with a happy cargo of six passengers, Pilot Johnny Martin and Copilot Joe Lewis for El Paso and a quick jaunt to Mexico.

On Sunday evening at 7:05 the ship returned with the same trusty aviators at the controls. And during that interim: THE AIRWAY Lightly the ship sailed o'er Sierra Madre mountains, dipped down to pick up the mail at Phoenix, quickly soared above the clouds until Tucson was "sighted; DRAMATIC TALKIE BRINGS STAR AND FATHER TOGETHER NONSTANCE BENNETT in "Bought" is to open Thursday at Warner Brothers' Hollywood and. Downtown theaters. First among the featured players supporting Miss Bennett in this picture is her father, Richard Bennett, and Ben Lyon. The star's parent is presented in just that role.

as her Based on the novel, "Jackdaw's Strut," by Harriet Henry; "Bought" presents a girl who is anxious to sell everything she possesses her pride, her honor, herself in exchange for luxury and social position. Forgetting her true friends she turns to the milling crowd of "swankdom" when opportunity offers, only to be rebuffed and betrayed by 'one who had professed to love her. Crushed and hurt, she returns to her old loves and finds there a new passion. The picture presents both father and daughter, on the screen for the first time. Archie Mayo directed.

The coming short subject bill promises exceptional entertainment, and is featured by A Merry Melody Cartoon, theme-songed by the pop-' ular hit, "One More Time." On. the same program will be the tenth of. the African Adventure series, "The Man Eaters," offering a glimpse into the lives of the Dark Continent's black folk who include human beings in their banquet menus. 'Mechanical' Man At Carthay Circle Puzzle to Crowds Arnold Boris Beinere, "The Mechanical Smiling Lieutenant" stationed in the forecourt of the Carthay Circle theater, does not blink an eyelash for 45 consecutive minutes. Beinere is proving almost of equal interest to Chevalier in "The Smiling Lieutenant," the screen attraction.

swooped earthward for more mail and then on to Douglas for another of Uncle Sam's bags and unhesitantly nosed toward the Panhandle, all before lunch time. The trip was marvelously smooth and cool, but El Paso was a hot place to land. Late Saturday night a big storm whipped up, the lightning flashed and the peals of thunder fairly shook the city. Great boulders swept down from the mountains and Williams street was a mass of cobblestones. Before Pilots Martin and Lewis left for Los Angeles they made many tests of their plane to assure passengers a safe trip, and because of inclement weather did not stop at Tucson or Douglas, but picked up the mail at Phoenix only.

AT WILCOX SEVENTH AT HILL ST. centuries removed in custom, Last Saturday was a tensified by brooding storms of the Organ mountains What cared the peons, so long as lightning bolts spared their tortilla carts? Listlessly leaning against thick 'dobe walls, bronze -hued natives drowsed the hours away, their slender cigarros platinum-ringed with ashes as they rested on full lower lips- was too warm to smoke. AWAKENING From beneath jet lashes these fiery temperamentalists allowed it known that they cared little if business was dull, or' that heat had kept tourists out of dusty calles.

"Manana" their wise glances indicated. Perhaps, one less lazy, would comment: "Se vala la cerveza cinco centavos," which well informed Los Angeles residents know means in Spanish, "beer is worth 5 cents." Those with imagination doffed their serapes, sombreros and pantelones and joined the women and children in the warm river, where they were swimming nude. Some even deserted their fruit stands and wagons for a swim. This was by day. A CHANGE By night Juarez was a teeming, alive, throbbing, colorful amusement center.

The town had thrown wide its portals. Its citizenry's sloe-eyes had opened; Mexican senoritas in bright vestidos and mantillas were ready for the evening's jollification. Radios and phonographs were grinding out musical selections; familiar American tunes seemed ludicrous in this un-American environment. Crowds poured into the gaming palaces. FOR TOURISTS Casino Turista Internacionalonce the Old Tivoli- opened its doors again.

The patio, with a mosaic tile fish pond, has little trees growing around it. The outer walls of the gambling emporium have been washed a rich strawberry pink: and clumps of tables seat visitors in sheltered corners. Inside, many attractions weaned dollars from Americans who gladly gave them for the thrill of roulette, poker and brother games. Saturday night, more than usual, the crowds were excited, for it was the eve of the "Gold. Ear" bullfight, and band wagons proclaimed the event.
