In the final game of the WABA's inaugural season the Diamonds defeated the All-Stars, 101-94, behind Nancy Lieberman's most-valuableplayer performance. "I thinks it's a fitting climax to a great season," said Ed Dubaj, the Diamonds' "To play an all-star team is tough, and it's tough for an all-star team to get organized." Opposthem were 10 all-stars from five WABA teams including players from the three teams Columbus, Atlanta and Virginia that suspended operations 10 days before the season was scheduled to end.
Houston and Chicago also were represented. Barbara Kennedy, 5-foot-11 center from the Virginia Wave, led the all-stars with 20 points. Laurie Byrd, a 5-7 forward from the Chicago Spirit, added 19. "The all-star team has been working hard," Dubaj said. "I think it's a tribute to all their players." The all-stars' coach, Larry Jones, who also coaches the Columbus Mink, said the inside game made the difference.
"I thought they beat us inside," Jones said. "They a are a real strong ballclub. There's no doubt about that. After trailing 30-25 at the end of the first quarter, the Diamonds used a balanced scoring attack to take the lead. With less than two minutes left in the half, Lori Scott put Dallas ahead 50-41.
The Diamonds took a 52- 46 lead to the locker room. But late in the third period the All-Stars put together a strong rally, regaining the lead, 66-65, with just less than two minutes to play in the third quarter. A Cassandra Crumpton jump shot quickly put the Diamonds ahead to stay. With 8:25 remaining in the game, the All-Stars tied the game at 76, but the Diamonds held on behind Lieberman's 10 points in the quarter. "Winning as a team was great," Lieberman said.
"There was SO much talent on the court tonight. This was the first time I really had to earn my paycheck. They really made us work tonight." Lieberman was selected the game's MVP after scoring 19 points. Paula McGee added 17. "What won it for us," Lieberman said, "was that we played as a team.
Personally, my goal is to go undefeated, win a championship and be the MVP. I succeeded thanks to my teammates." The Diamonds ended Sunday's game averaging 1,861 fans a game. Dubaj was not concerned about the lighter turnout for the all-star game. "I would've liked to see a little more," he said, "but the people here like what they see." Every player on the all-star team, with the exception of Chicago's TraEVENINGS Brown and Byrd are owed back pay by the league, Dubaj said. They played in the all-star game virtually for nothing.
"We just need two or three of the right people to get this mess cleaned up," Dubaj said. "We're $850,000 in debt. We can't do it overnight, but it'll come around."
