of Teens hit the road to urge weapon ban By LYNDA SHORTEN Journal Staff Writer Seventeen teenagers have taken to the highway to prove to provincial legislators youth is serious about having Alberta declared a nuclear weapons-free zone. The marchers, members of Youth for Peace, left Cold Lake Saturday and hope to hike the 180 miles to Edmonton in time for a 3 p.m. peace rally on the legislative grounds July 13. "We're marching down the highway to get support because what else can you do," one of the march organizers said Monday. Phillipa Beck said the which includes about 80 Edmonton members, most of them high school students, sent a petition 1 to the Alberta government a year and a half ago.
The petition, which demanded that Alberta join Manitoba and Vancouver as self-declared nuclear-free zones, ended up in the provincial archives. "We felt as youth we were being ignored we've had promises from politicians from all parties which have been basically empty," Beck said. The July 13 date is symbolic, she said, the closest the marchers could come to July 16 the anniversary of the first atomic weapons test in the U.S. And the group wanted to make sure that 1986, the UN's International Year of Peace "was not another farcical year," as was 1985's International Youth Year, according to Beck. Search fails to find boy in Calgary CALGARY A massive doorto-door police search Tuesday failed to find a 4-year-old missing boy, a day and a half after he wandered away from his mother while she was shopping in downtown Calgary. Jason King disappeared about 3:30 p.m. Monday while he and his mother were on the main floor of Toronto Dominion Square. "One minute he was there and the next minute she turned around and he was said Insp. Brian Larsen.
The mother and security staff at T-D Square looked for the boy but he had vanished. On Tuesday, about 200 police officers, many working overtime, took photographs of the missing boy to businesses and knocked on doors of houses and apartments thoughout the downtown core. "We've got every available man out there," said Insp. Gordon Ferguson. Police called off their search shortly after dark but intended to renew it at first light today, Larsen said.
Relatives of the missing boy were making inquiries of their own in the downtown area. "His mother and grandmother were out there at 4:30 this morning, driving around and calling his name," said Larsen. Civilians lent a hand in the search Tuesday night. Members of the Radio Emergency Association Citizens' Team co-ordinated the volunteers on CB radios. From the Calgary Herald B.C.
boy tested for transplant VANCOUVER (CP) A sixyear-old B.C. boy is undergoing tests at a hospital in London, England, to determine his suitability for a heart and lung transplant. Matthew Ekroth of Tsawwassen, B.C., flew to London last Friday with his parents to visit a team of doctors at Harfield hospital, which has performed similar heart-lung transplants. Ekroth's lungs are covered with scar tissue, which has reduced his lung capacity to about 30 per cent and has weakened his heart. Both organs must be replaced or the boy will die.
A family spokesman in Vancouver Tuesday said tests had begun the previous day and doctors should know by the end of the week whether the double organ transplant can proceed.
