Opening GG Bell Tonight By Jack Smith Golden Glovers start throwing their dynamite at the Felt Forum tonight as the 47th annual tournament, sponsored by the New York News Charities, gets under way. Condenders from the 160 and 147 pound Sub-Novice divisions open the campaign which leads to the March 16 Finals at Madison Square Garden. Bouts start at 8 p.m. The bout list includes prospective champs from Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, Westchester, Connecticut and Hudson County, N.J. Sub- Novices are battlers who have never before taken part in public competition.
They may be green but they're willing. They come out swinging. Most Clubs Entered Most of the boxing clubs are represented by one or more contenders. The clubs include the PAL. NYC Recreation, West Side YMCA, Knights CC, Castle Hill AC.
Cage Recreation, Morrisania CC and Third Moravian CC. Also in action will be Jersey City Recreation, which under coaches Al Santora and Jimmy Dupree, have entered their biggest squad in recent years. First of the Jersey City battlers to be called to action on tonight's opening card are the welterweights, Tom Shaw and Bill Enix. Enix is a 16 year old sophomore at Lincoln High in Jersey City. Connecticut contenders include George Cahill and Joseph Sgri- Ex -Glover Set In Main Event For the first time ever, 1 boxing show will be held at Roll-A-Rama Sports Center, 24th Ave.
and 86th Brooklyn, on Wednesday. Feature bout will be between Vito Antofuermo, ex-Golden Gloves welterweight champ, and Skip Eaton of Belfast, Ireland. Both are now middleweights. gnari, middleweights, and Charlie Heller, welterweight, from the Stamford B.C. and Michael Hupal of the Rice Midtown Gym, also in Stamford.
On the schedule from Westchester is 147 pounder Charley Zito, representing Cage Recreation of White Plains. Zito, comes from New Rochelle works as a refrigeration mechenic. Pre-Bout Regimen All contenders have been notified to report to the Forum at 7 p.m. for the pre-bout procedures. All must be weighed in and examined by the doctor.
