the next two weeks, Sharks become flying fish Lengthy road trip takes San Jose to Eastern rinks By Ross McKeon OF THE EXAMINER STAFF The Sharks take to the road trying to snap a six-game losing streak, but are already guaranteed success in one area racking up frequent-flyer miles. Expansion San Jose embarked Tuesday on one of the longest road trips an NHL team will make this season. The Sharks will make stops in seven cities over 13 days, tarting Wednesday in Hartford, before returning to the Bay Area early next month. Their home ice the Cow Palace is literally the reason for the marathon jaunt. Because the Daly City facility is booked for the annual Grand National Rodeo and Livestock Show (Friday to Nov.
3), the Sharks must swim in Eastern time zones until Nov. 8, when 1 they reclaim the building against Edmonton. "You share experiences on and off the ice and it helps to eventually reach goals together," Sharks coach George Kingston said. "I thought we fought adversity the first trip and the players came out of it learning some things. But it's not an easy trip." After the road opener against the Whalers, the Sharks venture to Buffalo Friday, New Jersey the next night, to New York against the Islanders Tuesday, to Philade.phia on Halloween, to Quebec Nov.
2 and, finally, to Toronto Nov. 4. Lest anyone think it gets easier, well, it doesn't. San Jose will later this season make two six-game treks (Jan. 7-21 with an All-Star break in the middle and March 19-29).
Los Angeles is the only other Smythe Division member with a seven-game road trip, which in terms of geography is understandable. Because n-based Winnipeg, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary aren't as far away from NHL Kings play Devils' advocates ASSOCIATED PRESS EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Laurie. Boschman and the New Jersey Devils decided the slump had gone far enough. After opening the season with four straight wins, the Devils dropped the next four games in a plunge to the .500 level.
They finally righted themselves Tuesday night as Boschman scored twice to lead the Devils to a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings. "Four games is about three games too long for a losing streak to go," Boschman said. "We've got a pretty good club here, but we just have to play well defensively. We have enough players to get our goals offensively." Flames 4, North Stars 2: Joel Otto and Gary Roberts each scored two goals as Calgary built a 3-0 lead and held on for the victory, ending Minnesota's unbeaten string at home. Otto scored second-period shorthanded and power-play goals and Roberts netted an empty-net goal with 1:21 left to secure the victory for the Flames.
Penguins 4, Blackhawks 4: Mark Recchi and Bryan Trottier scored in the third period as Pittsburgh rallied from a pair of twogoal deficits to tie visiting Chicago. Penguins center Mario Lemieux missed his first game of the season with back spasms that forced him to leave last Saturday's game in the third period. Islanders 1, Jets 1: Darrin Shannon's first goal of the season with 2:55 left in regulation gave Winnipeg the tie with the New York before a sparse crowd of 6,529 'at The Nassau Colistam. SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER Wednesday, October 23, 1991 C-3 sota two nights earlier. "The Minnesota game was the worst we've played, and we followed that with the best game we've played (Boston)," Kingston said.
"We've got 71 more games. That's 142 points. We'll get better." NOTES: Kingston wasn't going to name Wednesday's starting goaltender until after talking to each of the three (Jeff Hackett, Brian Hayward and Jarmo Myllys) on the flight. It would be Hackett's turn in San Jose's unique threegoalie rotation. "Ultimately the right way is to go with two," Kingston said.
"With 71 games left, we're not going to rush into something rash and make a bad decision." SHARKS TV The 1991-92 schedule of San Jose Sharks games which will broadcast on SportsChannel: Saturday, Oct. 26. at New Jersey, 4:30 p.m Tuesday, Oct. 29 at N.Y. Islanders, 4:30 p.m.

Islanders, 4:30 p.m. Local cable TV adds Sharks opponents, those teams don't need to stray away from home as long (the Oilers' longest trip is six games; the other three teams' longest trips are five each). But the Kings' seven-gamer (Oct.
22-Nov. 2) will be completed in 12 days. In addition, L.A. doesn't have any sixgame stands. San Jose has taken one step to alleviate travel concerns by leasing its own charter.
With their own flight crew, the Sharks will come and go as they please in a modified, all first-class seating 737, which includes video monitors for coaches and players to review or preview opponents. It's the same plane used by the Baltimore Orioles during the baseball season. The Sharks' departure from Oakland Tuesday was delayed for five hours, however, due to a problem with the plane's tires. San Jose was scheduled to reach the East Coast by 4 a.m. Once the team gets where it's going, it still has something to accomplish.
And according to veteran forward Steve Bozek, it's more than winning. "Everybody's looking at us as an easy two points right now," said Bozek of the 1-8 Sharks. "We've got to start getting respect from the other teams. A lot of guys are looking to pad their stats, get lots of goals and assists." And while Kingston admits it'll be a challenging jaunt, he sees some positives. "I think it's going to be easier than the other one because we're not going coast-to-coast," Kingston said, referring to San Jose's recent swing through St.
Louis, Chicago and Los Angeles in five days. "There will be teams that'll be fresh. Hartford's playing well, the- Islanders are playing well. On the other hand, we have to build on the games we've played lately." When last on the ice, the Sharks were hard-luck losers to Boston Saturday. Despite outshooting an opponent for the first time this season (37-28), San Jose hit a pair of posts and surrendered its fifth empty-net goal of the season in a 4-1 loss to the Bruins.
This, however, came on the heels of an embarrassing 8-2 loss at home to Minne- SportsChannel Pacific is adding the San Jose Sharks to its premium-channel coverage that already includes the Giants, A's and Warriors. The Bay Area regional TV network announced Tuesday that it had completed an agreement that calls for it to air 20 Sharks games on an exclusive basis through the rest of the 1991-92 season. The 20-game schedule will consist of 10 home and 10 road games. The first telecast is scheduled for Saturday at 4:30 p.m., when the Sharks take on the Devils in New Jersey. Veteran Bay Area announcer Joe Starkey will handle play-byplay, along with Randy Hahn, with EXAMINER STAFF REPORT former NHL players Dennis Hull and Tom Laidlaw serving as analysts.
Sharks president and chief executive officer Art Savage noted the new pay-television deal will bring coverage of the team, in its initial season, to 50 TV and 80 radio broadcasts. "With the prospect of many home games being sold out," Savage said, "it is an important service for us to show additional games to our growing base of Northern California fans who are unable to acquire tickets." SportsChannel Pacific's Sharks' coverage will add 20 games to an NHL lineup that includes more than 50 regular-season games and Stanley Cup playoff action from SportsChannel America network.
