Aloysius of Jersey City and Holy Family of Union City captured the Catholic and championships of the 38th annual New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Assn. basketball tournament at Rutgers University last night. A crowd of 900 fans saw the twin bill. St. Aloysius wore down St.

The Jersey City five captured its 22nd victory in 24 starts by combining some good shooting off the fast break and accuracy at the foul line. Fred Corbalis turned in a tremendous job for the winners, scoring 32 points and directing the fast break attack. The game started off as if St. Aloysius was going to walk away with it as it took a 9-0 lead on a pair of baskets and a foul by Dick Kaminski, a layup by Corbalis and a set shot by Bob Ernst. John Saxenmeyer and Vince Gepp led the shore team back so that it only trailed 16-11 at the close of the first period.
Corbalis and Mike DiLonardo each hit for two baskets in the second quarter as the Hudson County crew took a 31-25 halftime advantage. St. Aloysius, using a double screen to perfection against St. Rose's 2-1-2 zone, hit on 10 of 13 field goal attempts from up close in the third period to outscore its rival, 25-18. After the teams traded three baskets to open the quarter, St.
Rose made its last serious threat. Lou -Carr netted two free throws and Saxenmeyer hit on his fourth straight jump shot of the quarter to narrow the deficit to two points, 37-35. St. Aloysius however, led by Corbalis' two baskets, ripped off eight straight points for a ten point spread, 45-35. Tom Goghan's two foul tosses for the losers broke the string but the Jersey City team then tallied eight of the next ten points for a 53-39 lead.
Saxenmeyer was the whole St. Rose show in the final half, hitting on eight of 16 shots, and he finished with 23 points. Leading 69-59 midway through the final quarter, St. Aloysius dispelled all thoughts of a St. Rose comeback by ripping off seven consecutive points to wrap up the game.

Union Hill to Play Trenton High Tonight at Rutgers Gym Union Hill, defending champion in Group IV, takes on Trenton High, the South Jersey titleholder, tonight in the feature game of two NJSIAA tournament contests to be played at the Rutgers University gymnasium. The Hudson county cagers, with 6-5 George Ramming leading the attack, polished off Orange High to the tourney finals. Trenton, sparked by ceach, Wally Colender, defeated Atlantic City in the pen- ultimate round.
The Group IV struggle will start at approximately 8:45 o'clock following the Group between North Arlington and Bordentown which will get under way at 7:30. North Arlington gained the championsbip round for the third straight year by ousting Belvidere, 80-52. John Calabrese, North Arlington star, scored 29 points to establish a new Bergen County career record of 1,149 points. Bordentown moved into its first championship game by virtue of a 51-41 victory over Rumson in the semi-finals. A capacity crowd of 2,800 is expected to witness the doubleheader at Rutgers.

Robin Roberts Looks Good For 20 Wins for 7th Year By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS There is one thing almost as certain as death, taxes and the common cold. Robin Roberts will win 20 games.
And why not? The strapping righthander of the Philadelphia Phillies, who normally winds up with the most "everything" among National League pitchers, has been a 20-game winner the last six years and he's looked better than ever this spring. A Title Clash St. Peter's (J C) Wins Sixth Straight Crown With Last Period Drive PRINCETON St. a leech-like defense and a a trio of magicians to knock Brunswick 65-48 in the pionship game here last night. The Cardinals stayed with the swift and classy Jersey City team until the middle of the third period.
Then the Prep Schoolers broadened their man-for-man defense into an all-court press that throttled the Cardinal attack and laid its defenses wide open for Prep's vaunted fast break. When the final buzzer sounded there was hardly a murmur from the 2,000 brave customers who had beaten snowy trails to the inviting lights Princeton University's gymnasium. For one thing, nearly all the onlookers were New Brunswick rooters. And for those few visitors from Hudson County a State Tournament title is something short of stimulating--this being the sixth straight year they've won the crown. St.
Peter's of New Brunswick, on the other hand, was looking for its first state title in 17 years. And up until the third period blitz by Prep, there was good reason to believe that the Cardinals might that elusive crown. Their shooting, was off throughout the first half, mainly because Prep refused to be set up for picks and made them earn every basket, but still they hung on to the Jersey City quintet. The Cardinals held leads of 8-6 and 19-18 in that first half, and were trailing only 26-23 at the intermission. St.
Peter's Prep, which entered the game with the identical record as the Cardinals, 18-2, and a 75.4 game scoring average, had only a minimum of success with its fast break against the Cardinals zone defense in those first 16 minutes. Prep, to, was struggling for every shot. Cardinals Take Lead Then, with the third period half finished, the Cardinals put together their best run of the night. Art Criss drove out of the corner for a layup, and Bill Connery hit twice on drives to put St. Peter's of New Brunswick ahead 33-31 with 3:35 to play in the quarter.
Jerry Halligan, young, first-year mentor at the Jersey City school, ordered a time out here, and when Prep returned to the court it went into the all press that had paid off with an 80-76 victory over Seton Hall in the North Jersey finals last week. The press paid off again, and promptly. In the first minute and 45 seconds following the switch in defensive tactics, the Prep School- ers scored six straight points to take a 37-33 lead. They were never headed again. Forward Mike Pedone was the big gun in this assault with a pair of fouls and a jump shot.
George Richvalsky, Prep's slended 6-4 center, started the run with a hook. Two foul conversions by Bill Leppert and a jump shot by Dick Staggard put the Cardinals in a challenging position again, 37-39, as the third period closed. But a string of five points at the outset of the last quarter gave Jersey City the cushion it needed. After that the Cardinals were waging a futile battle. Prep's allcourt press stopped them time and time again before they even had a chance to launch a shot.
Either Pedone or Jack Crotty, the Prep wheelhorse and one of the best 00 0 PETERS With its victory, Holy Family holds two straight championship game decisions over Wildwood Catholic. The Union City five gained the Parochial title last year with a triumph over Wildwood Catholic. The Ocean County team couldn't put together two good quarters otherwise it might have had a better fate. After falling behind 14-5 at the close of the first quarter, Wildwood battled back to trail by a single point, 26-25 at the halftime intermission. The Wildwood five, after its fine showing in the second quarter, just about lost the game at the foul line in the third period.
The losers missed six of six foul tries at outset of the quarter which enabled Holy Family to gain a 32-25 bulge. Ted Fitzick's layup with 3:30 remaining to play in the quarter gave Wildwood its first points of the period. Holy Family, holder of a season record, had much the better of it in the rebounding department with 6-4 Jim Roche and 6-3 Fran Kelly controlling the boards until Roche had to leave the game late in the second period with four personal fouls. Baskets by Ray Gill, Kelly and Tom Caruso enabled the winners to stretch their advantage to 11 points, 41-30 as the third quarter ended. Led by Fitzick and John Phipps, Wildwood scored the first three baskets of the final period for a 43-36 score.
Fred Schneider netted four fouls sandwiched between a layup by Frank St. John for a 45-38 Holy Family lead. Twopointers by George Roth and Phipps narrowed the count to 45-42 but Gill came back with a jump shot for a 47-42 lead. Fitzick's pair of fouls again cut the deficit to three points but Holy Family then ran off a string of five points for a 52-44 advantage. Schneider dumped in two fouls and Kelly came through with a threepoint play for an eight point lead with less than a minute to play which proved to be insurmountable for the South Jersey team.

Catholic Bill Russell Just Stops Them Dead By The Associated Press Bill Russell, the iron curtain of the Golden Gate, may not be a oneman basketball team but he certainly is a one-man defensive platoon for the University of San Francisco.
While gangling all-America is minding the cords, the Dons' opponents might as well not shoot from the outside, as UCLA learned to its dismay in Corvallis, last night. The Uclans managed to hit on just five field goals in the first half and were frustrated completely by "goalie" Russell. As a result, what shaped up as a battle between two of the Pacific Coast towers of strength turned into a routine 72-61 victory for the Dons over a team that had won 17 straight. UCLA's last defeat was administered by San Francisco in December. It was San Francisco's 52nd straight victory and an important one because it advanced Phil Wolpert's lads one step closer to a successful defense of their coveted NCAA championship.
The game was a western regional and tonight the Dons are favored when they meet Utah in the quarter finals. He was plucked off the Michigan State campus in 1948 and given $25,000 sign by the Phils. Since then he's compiled 160 victories against 102 defeats, a commendable mark considering that his team hasn't exactly been a ball of fire since 1950. Curt Simons, a 17-game winner in 1950 and on whom Manager Mayo Smith is depending to help make the club a contender this season, hurled three innings against Cincinnati yesterday and gave up two runs. Jack Meyer, the crack reliever of '55, nailed down the triumph with a final two-inning stint. Meanwhile, the champion Brooklyn Dodgers got back on the beam, edging the Chicago White Sox 10-9 on a three run rally in the eighth inning.
Larry Doby of Paterson, obtained from Cleveland this winter, slamed a pair of home runs for the Sox. It was only the Brooks' second victory in seven games. The Indians got excellent relief pitching from Ray Narleski in the last four innings and came from behind to beat the New York Giants 5-4. Narleski gave up only one hit as Cleveland tied the game in the sixth and picked up the winning run in the next frame on a triple by Al Smith and a single by Rudy Regaldo. The Baltimore Orioles won their first game after six defeats, nipping the Chicago Cubs 7-6.
The Pittsburgh Pirates put 14 hits, half of them for extra bases, to down the Detroit Tigers 10-5. City outscored the Cardinals In that, last period, the Jersey 26-11. They took 21 shots in the period and made nine. St.
Peter's made only three out of 12 in the last session. An indication of the havoc wrought by Prep's terrific defensive play can be found in the shooting statistics. Prep made 25 field goals in 60 attempts and St. Peter's hit on only 16 out 51, one of their poorest shootings of the campaign. Further, Prep got off nine more shots than the Cardinals despite the fact that Coach Jake Bornheimer's lads commanded a 40-31 edge in rebounds.
Prep got the most shots because it forced the Cardinals into tactical errors that resulted in steals or poor passes. Crotty, who proved he can play defense by holding Connery to three baskets while guarding him in the first half, topped all scorers with 19 points, one under his game average for the season. Richvalsky tossed in 17 and McDonald and Pedone each made 12. Connery made 17 points for the losers and Criss and Bob Cone scored 12 and 10, respectively. Cone pulled down 16 rebounds, one more than Richvalsky collected.
He also accounted for all three Cardinal baskets in the final period. After winning the city title from New Brunswick High School and downing Camden Catholic and Trenton Catholic in their three most recent games, the Cardinals were due for a letdown. But St. Peter's Prep's able crew of opportunists isn't the sort of team that will let another enjoy this privilege. Once the gates opened late in the third period, they were gone.
