Spartans return to final TOMS RIVER For the third straight year, Ocean will get a crack at the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group sectional title, and the No. 2-seeded Spartans are hoping the third time will be the charm. Ocean defeated No.
3 West Windsor-Plainsboro North, 91-79, in Monday's sectional semifinal, the second year in a row the Spartans have defeated the Knights to reach the championship meet. Ocean will try for its first sectional title for the third straight time after losses to Princeton in each of the past two seasons. "A number of years ago, it was one and done for us in the state tournament and that was still an accomplishment," Ocean coach Bill Lynch said. Jackie McGuckin came in right after Hindman with a time of 1:06.61 to give Ocean the lead for good, 71-69. "It's good to mix it up and I'm a team player so I'll do my best in whatever (the coaches) put me in," said Hindman, who also took second in the 100 butterfly. "I'm happy that they trust me enough to move me wherever they need me." Jess Eager and Dorea DiMaggio effectively sealed the meet by finishing first and second, respectively, in the 100 breast. Eager finished in 1:12.93 and DiMaggio in 3:54.63 to give Ocean an 83-73 lead heading into the final event. Needing only a second-place finish to win the meet, Ocean's team of Danielle Caruso, Hindman, Eager and Melissa West emphatically ended the meet with a 3:54.63, first-place finish in the 400 free relay.
The quartet also won the 200 medley relay in 1:57.75 to open the meet. The distance freestyle events helped keep Ocean afloat before the 31-15 run in the final three events. Caruso, the Shore Conference champion in both the 200 and 500 free, handily won both of her signature events with teammates coming in right behind her each time. Melissa West took second in each race and Cat Gepner gave Ocean sweep in the 500 with a third-place finish. She narrowly missed a thirdplace finish in the 200, but made the most of her second opportunity.
"I really didn't want to finish (fourth) again," Gepner said. "I just missed it the first time so I figured I'd put my head down and go for it." The Spartans' win sets up an all-Shore match-up at North Brunswick High School on Friday. Ocean will take on the winner of tonight's meet between No. 4 Wall and No. 1 Manasquan.
Ocean beat Wall 93-77 earlier in the season and did not swim Manasquan, which has not lost to a Shore Conference team this season.
