The Sydney Morning Herald, Friday, December 29, 1950 WARRAH KING MAY BE ELECT Carrington Discussions Bookmakers believe that Warrah King will start a firm favourite for the Carrington Stakes at Randwick to-morrow. The Carrington is the first "leg" of the Carrington-Tattersall's Club Cup double at Randwick. In the opinion of book- makers, if the double were open to sustained pre-post betting as with the Villiers and Summer Cup, Warrah King would constitute a first "'leg" at a prohibitive price. Pantomime is expected to be Warrah King's closest rival in the Carrington market. Pantomime beat Warrah King at their most recent meeting in Flying Handicap (64f) at Rosehill on December 16.

On that occasion Warrah King conceded an actual 8lb to Pantomime, who was ridden by apprentice R. Binder, claiming a 71b allowance. In Saturday's race, Pantomime and Warrah King are assessed equally at 7-13, so that the mare has been handicapped to meet Warrah King on 71b worse terms, with Rosehill as a basis. Pantomime's elevation in status stems from her success in the Chisholm Handicap at Randwick last Tuesday, when she won the seven event with a brilliant exhibition of galloping, beating Artois and Golden Wedge. Fairly Treated PANTOMIME A RIVAL turn, but finished strongly to beat Trover and Acquittal, the field including no light than High Jip, who scored at Randwick at his next start.

The Carrington field this occasion includes a of lumber' very speedy gallopers. Hesdin has accepted with top weight of 9-1, and he will endeavour to retrieve a reputation tarnished somewhat by his failure in the Villiers after three consecutive Sydney successes. Although Acquittal has not won a race in Sydney for some time, bookmakers intend to offer very conservative odds about him. He proved his quality as a sprinter when he was second to Hesdin in the Festival Handicap at Rosehill on December 16. Safe Price Midwise will be held at a safe price, because bookmakers believe that trainer Harold Cooper, who is also part-owner of the mare, has set her for the race.

Skip Court, winner of the Carrington last year, when he beat San Domenico, is at a price consistent with the relatively poor form he has shown recently, despite that, with 7-2. he has entered handicaps on the actual limit. An important Carrington riding change is that Binder will be replaced on Pantomime by A. Ward, who displayed clever horsemanship to win the Villiers on Field Boy. As distinct from the Chisholm Handicap, the Carrington is race in which apprentices cannot claim, and the Pantomime DECISIONS TO The AJ.C.

committee will announce decisions at 4.30 p.m. to-day on number of appeals. Hearing of appeals, based on penalties for alleged doping and improper practices, began fortnight ago. The appeals concern 1 four trainers and a jockey-the the trainers against sentences connected with doping, the jockey against a disqualification. stable is anxious to match every pound of weight with race experience.

The Denman Handicap, which will be the pointer to Tattersall's Club Cup prospects, has attracted an acceptance of 11. Topweight is Chitral, who won City Tattersall's Gold Cup at the conclusion of the Sydney spring carnival, but who. because of his recent return from a spell, is unlikely to be favourite tomorrow. SIDWELL ADVANCES TO TENNIS FINAL Cumberland tennis championship. SIDWELL WAS DETERMINED By ADRIAN QUIST Playing with precision and determination, Billy Sidwell, in yesterday's semi-final, defeated the brilliant N.S.W.

colt Lewis Hoad in straight sets. Bill Sidwell frowns in concentration as he plays a forehand return to Lewis Hoad at Pratten Park yesterday. Sidwell beat Hoad, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the final of the N.Z. Games Cycling Stopped By Rain CHRIST CHURCH, Thursday (A.A.P.).-Rain caused postponement of the Canterbury Games cycling events to-night. The forecast for to-morrow is "intermittent showers," but athletic events are not expected to be seriously affected.

To-day's swimming programme ended with the dwindling almost as wet as the competitors as a result of the steady downpour. The Australian team drew I satisfaction from the fact that the winning margin of the spectacular Dutch woman freestyler, Irma, Schumacker, was reduced even though Barbara Hicks had to yield second place to a New Zealander. The failure of Judy Joy Davies against Dutch backstroke champion, Geertje Galliard, was compensated for by the fact that Margaret Pascall, in her best showing here, claimed second place. With eight wins, Holland has now scored the most victories of the 10 countries competing in the games. Australia and the United States share second place with six wins each, followed by New Zealand (5), England (3), Canada, Sweden, Jamaica, and Fiji (1 each), and Denmark (0).

Holland's record is remarkable, as there are only four Dutch competitors. Swimmers Irma Schumacker and I Geertje Galliard have each won three races, and professional cyclist Arie van Vliet has won two. SWIMMING Men 110yds freestyle: L. Beaumont 1: J. McLane (U.S.), Heusner (U.S.), 3.

The first set was very evenly contested. Had Hoad not fallen into easy errors he may well have won the opening set. COMEBACK FOR CARR Empire Games quartermile champion Edwin Carr hopes to resume training in a fortnight.

Carr badly injured his left ankle at football last winter. After a long rest he returned to training and was nearing his top when he suffered a recurrence of the injury. He is now relaxing on the beach. But he will begin light training in two weeks' time in the hope of contesting the Australian championships at Hobart in March. His father, former champion E.

W. "Slip" Carr, does not consider the injury will jeopardise his son's athletic future. DATES SET FOR SPEED TESTS next The Australian Speedway Control Board has approved the following dates for the remaining six Tests between England and 5, Sydney Sports Ground; 13, Sydney Showground; 26, Sports Ground; 27, Newcastle. February: 2, Sports Ground; 10, Brisbane Showground. W.A.

Girl Swimmer Is Hailed By U.S. Coach Canterbury Games. Miss Pascall, a 16-year- old Perth girl, has gained great credit for herself in the championships as a backstroke swimmer. Daughters is a noted American authority on swimming, and was American women's Olympic team coach in 1932 and 1936. and also attended the London Olympic Games in 1948.

His view confirms that of wellknown Sydney coaches Harry Hay and Forbes Carlile. He describes Miss Pascall as a good technician who needs only experience to reach the top. Times Improve "She has the attributes of a great should take her far in the swimmer, with a potential swimming world," said Daughters to-day. In three swims, the Perth girl has improved her times immeasurably since leaving Australia. This is, of course, due to the incentive of international competition, in which she has met From FRANK TIERNEY CHRISTCHURCH, Margaret Pascall is one of the greatest swimming prospects in the world, according to Ray Daughters, coach-manager of the American swimming team at the European star Geertje Galliard, tralian backstroke champion, of Holland, and Australian Judy Percy Oliver.

Match FROM TOM GOODMAN Douglas Wright, who missed the Australian XI game in Sydney, probably will appear in the return match against N.S.W. at the Sydney Cricket Ground to-morrow.

Compton and, Dewes, and probably Bedser, who has played in eight of the M.C.C. team's last nine matches, will be rested. The team will be named tonight. Compton continues to have treatment for his injured right knee. Dewes, although he batted on the last day of the Melbourne Test, has not completely recovered from his indisposition.

Test wicket-keeper Godfrey Evans might be spelled. If Brown plays, it will mean an end to Len immediate hopes of the M.C.C. team in a major match of the tour. If Brown and Compton both were out, Hutton, the senior professional, would be the obvious choice as deputy leader. Practice For Test N.S.W.'s Test players, Arthur Morris, Keith Miller, Ray, Lindwall, and Jim Burke, will want to take full advantage of the batting practice that this match offers.

Lindwall will not be overworked as a bowler, as there will be only one day's break between this match and the third Test, starting here next Friday. Everyone will be keenly interested in the form of opening batsman Jack Moroney, who was Test Wicket Covering MELBOURNE, Australian Cricket Board of Control is believed to have agreed that Test wickets should be covered between play. If the West Indies Cricket Board agrees to this, wickets will be covered when the West Indies team tours Australia next year. dropped by the Australian selectors after the first Test. With the exception of Eric Hollies and Trevor Bailey, the Englishmen will arrive in Sydney by plane this morning.

Hollies, who is upset by air travel, will be accompanied by Bailey on a train trip, arriving in Sydney to-morrow morning. Test Reflections Calm reflection after the exciting second Test leads to these conclusions: Taking the match all through, England had the better of the pitch, and threw the match away, by bad batting on the second day, when conditions were most favourable. Both teams showed batting instability. Some batsmen magnified the "terrors" arising from the element of uncertainty in the pitch, after it had been sun-baked hard during the two days in which play was suspended. England would have won with Denis Compton, who, by his great valuable support a to Hutton.

Had wicket-keeper Ron Saggers been available, he would have "walked" into the third Test team in place of Don Tallon. Ray Lindwall, by his beautifully controlled swing bowling at the crisis, proved that he is still in the top flight. Arthur To Ride Again A former world speedway champion, Frank Arthur, will make a comeback at the Sports Ground to-night.

He will contest a Veterans' Handicap, which is included in The "Crazy Night" programme. Now 42, Arthur, began his career 1926 Brisbane. In 1928 and 1929 he was recognised as the best rider ever. His opponents on Friday will include veterans Jack Alderson, Jack Clementson, and Bill Baxter. Apart from the "crazy" events on Friday night, England's Test riders will meet the Sports Ground team over nine heats.

A full programme of sidecar and speedcar events has been included. SCORES IN colt L. Favell scored 78 (12 fours) in 74 minutes for Rockdale KiaOra against Petone United In New Zealand on Wednesday. In view of the form displayed by Pantomime at Rosehill and again in the Chisholm Handicap, and taking a line through Villiers weights, the mare has not been harshly treated to-morrow, But bookmakers believe that Warrah King will be benefited by his run at Rosehill, that, at the weights, he will be sought after by punters and that he will beat th- -40 01 the stable are that Pantomime should try to win the Carrington Stakes and also the Australia Day Handicap (7f) After that she will be set to win the Scone Cup, because her owners, Mr.

and Mrs. G. A. Christmas, are controllers of the Oak Range Stud in that district. Ultimately her destiny is to become a matron at Oak Range, and the owners are anxious that she should accumulate a racing record that will give her a stud foundation.

Warrah King's Rosehill run was his first public appearance since he won The Shorts (6f) at Randwick on October 2. On that occasion Warrah King was taken wide around the home Only Nine Left In Carrington Only nine horses yesterday survived the acceptance for to-morrow's Carrington Stakes, but the field still promises to be bigger than last year. The Carrington (£1,750 added) will be run over six furlongs at Randwick. It is the first "leg" of Tattersall's Club's summer double. Of the eight acceptors for the last Carrington, Grey Boots was withdrawn.

Skip Court (6-13) won by a length and a qu quarter from San Domenico (9-8), with Sheba (8-3) a long neck away, third. In addition to Skip Court, who is to carry 7-2, two of last year's Carrington runners are to start in the race to-morrow. These are Hesdin (9-1) and Midwise (7-9). A year ago Hesdin and Midwise, both of whom finished out of a place, carried 6-13 and 7-0 respectively. Turf Man Dies At 68 Russell Brennan, who, before becoming a trainer, was a successful jockey, died on Christmas Day, aged 68.

Brennan was known chiefly to the present generation of racegoers as a trainer. He trained Satin Bird, winner of the 1917 Epsom Handicap, Young Crusader, winner of the 1936 Metropolitan and 1937 Summer Cup, and Tantrum. winner of an Adrian Knox Stakes. As a jockey, Brennan won the 1899 and 1900 Summer Cups on Blue Metal. On the same horse he won the Australian Cup and the V.R.C.

Loch Plate in 1902. The experience of Sidwell, however, prevailed during the important exchanges. Hoad is improving and the valuable experience he is gaining from meeting the topliners will prove invaluable in the next two years. Sidwell volleyed and smashed beautifully throughout the match and, when pressure was necessary, he was able to produce the correct shot at the right time. The other semi-final played between No.

1 N.Z. star, Robson, and Quist. Robson unfortunately in New Zealand does not gain sufficient play against internationals, and to-day it was noticeable that, when he needed a point badly, he was not able to take advantage of the situation. He played really splendid tennis to win the second set 6-0 after having dropped the first. Fine Backhand During this set his backhand, which is a finely executed shot, was played with deep to my forehand corner.

The erratic bound of the court made it extremely difficult to negotiate a passing shot. Robson, realising it was essential to maintain pressure, kept up a sound attack found it extremely difficult to keep ahead. However, in the last set his confidence deteriorated and his attacking game deserted him. This enabled to take the initiative and wine this set 6-1. The final of the singles between Sidwell and Quist will be played next Monday.

Alex Jany's Thirteen Aust. Swims rated the world's leading sprint swimmer, is scheduled to make 13 appearances in Australia. For the first time in Australian swimming history, the world's two leading sprint swimmers Jany and the Dutch girl Irma Schumacher will be competing at the same time in this country. Jany and his wife Josette, formerly Josette Arcucci, wellknown French swimmer, will arrive in Sydney by plane at 7 a.m. on Monday.

Jany's tour, which officially opens on January 13 and ends with the final night of the Australian championships in Melbourne on February 24, is restricted to leading cities in Australia. He and his wife will travel all the way by plane. Despite heavy requests, country centres have been omitted from the programme. If Jany will agree, a 330 yards international medley teams' race will be included in the New South Wales championships to be held at the North Sydney Olympic Pool on January 13, 17, and 20. The international team would probably comprise Jany, Hungarian 1948 Olympic representative Almar Czatmary and a New Zealand swimmer.

A New South Wales team could include Frank O'Neill (freest style), David Hawkins (breaststroke) and Les O'Keeffe (backstroke). Jany's Australian programme January. is: 13: Brisbane. N.S.W. January 1 and 20: championships.

Strong contenders for the title will be Olympic Games representative Charlie Bazzano, Stan Daly, and Australia's most improved cyclist, John Tresidder. The heats of the senior mile and the junior five-mile championships will also be held. The first race will start at 7 p.m.
