THE TENNESSEAN, Monday, March 30, 1981 Way Clear For April 10 Liftoff Space Shuttle Passes Final Two Tests By IKE FLORES CAPE CANAVERAL (AP) The space shuttle came through two final fueling tests in excellent shape, clearing the way for an April 10 liftoff for the Columbia's much-delayed maiden voyage, launch director George Page said yesterday. 73-hour launch countdown could begin Sunday at 10:30 p.m. CST, Page said. An official launch date for the reusable spacecraft's first mission must await a flight readiness review today at the Kennedy Space Center by program directors of the $8 billion program. "WE FEEL THE 10TH is a viable launch date," Page said after a "hands-on" inspection of the two critical fuelings of the 15-story external tank, which feeds.

the orbiter's three main engines. The Columbia is to return to Earth on airwings for a landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California after its first 54-hour orbital flight. The flight is over two years behind schedule. he both tests were successful," Page said. "We have absolutely no debonding problem." THE FUEL LOADING tests Wednesday and Friday, which involved the loading of 526,000 gallons of super-cold liquid oxygen and hydrogen, were designed to test cork insulation on the surface of the aluminum tank.

About 32 insulation tiles came unglued in a similar test in January. The tiles are intended to protect the shuttle from the searing heat of re entry into the atmosphere. was The delicate for job of installing the tiles a major reason the delayed liftoff. Page said technicians and engineers who checked the silo-like tank found "a few foam, cracks" that can readily be fixed. A sprayed-on foam covers the cork tiles.

SAID THE LAUNCH preparation schedule now being followed actually leads to a launch date of April 9. But he said later he felt that date would be "too optimistic." And he said he wants to give the launch team a day off before liftoff. Page said cracks in the foam and other minor problems would be corrected this week, as pre-launch servicing of power units continues. Thursday, Friday and Saturday we will do the final, preparations and pick up the launch countdown on Sunday night," he said. Wrestler Don Fargo Draws Pot Term AN ACCIDENT BOARD inquiry into the launch pad incident 10 days ago in which one worker died and another was critically injured will not delay liftoff, Page said.

The inquiry board may, however, recommend revisions in safety procedures, he said: In explaining the accident board's investigation, Page and National Aeronautics and Space Administration information officer Hugh Harris said the inquiry might last beyond the launch. Page said it would be correct to that safety procedures had been "tightened" because of the accident, which occurred when workers mistakenly entered a chamber filled with nitrogen. The shuttle is intended as the workhorse of the U.S. space program, replacing single-use rockets. It will carry experiments, astronauts and scientists into orbit and then return them to Earth.

He's Don Little: outdoorsman, father, teacher. The work he does with 5th grade students at Cole Elementary means that a lot of kids who might never have seen high school go on to brighter, more productive futures. There's just one problem: Don can't make a living doing that job. To support his family, Don Little, the teacher, has sold household products, pumped gas, driven tour busses, anything to make some extra money.

He puts it this way: The most obvious problem is that teachers don't make a living wage. The other big problem is lack of support from the public. Teachers are afraid to even raise their voices in the classroom, no matter how bad the discipline problem may be. Don has taken the advanced degree for an administrative job, a move that would take him out of the classroom he loves. The sad fact is that if we can't support good teachers like Don with higher salaries and more understanding of the difficult jobs they do -we're going to lose them.

And when we do, we'll lose the best hope our kids have for the future. The Metropolitan Nashville Education Association is fighting to make sure this doesn't happen. Find out how you can help.
