6, 1978 C5. Ford snubs U.S. $535 million plant going to Canada TORONTO (AP) Ford Motor Co. will build a $535 million automobile engine plant in southern Ontario instead of in Ohio, despite protests from U.S. officials who wanted the plant in the United States.

The announcement, made by William Davis, has been confirmed by Ford of Canada President Roy F. Bennett. "The decision to build, however, is still subject to reaching final agreement with the various levels of government and to the resolution of certain legal matters," Bennett said in a statement. "This new 1.3 million-square foot facility will employ 2,600 persons and represents our largest single investment since the company was founded 74 years ago," he added. Davis said the new plant will pay more than $60 million a year in taxes.

As an incentive for Ford to locate there, the governments of Canada and Ontario offered the company a $68 million straight cash payment, $40 million of which will come from the federal government and the rest from Ontario. Sav-On records best effort to date Marina Del Rey-based Sav-On-Drugs Inc. achieved the highest sales and earnings in its history for both the first half and second quarter of 1978. R.L. Call, president, said for the six months ended June 30 sales increased 21 percent to $206,184,000 from $170,343,000 in the first half of 1977.

Net income rose 25 percent to $3,553,000, equal to 49 cents per share, from $2,850,000, or 39 cents a share, in the like six-month period of last year. In the second quarter of 1978, the three months ended' June 30, sales rose 22 percent to $107,459,000 from $88,238,000 in the second quarter of. 1977. Net income increased 16 percent to $1,975,000, equal to 27 cents per share, from $1,702,000, or 23 cents a share, in the three months ended June 30, 1977. It was noted the operating results in the second quarter of 1977 benefited from the fact the pre-Easter selling period fell in that quarter whereas it occurred in the first quarter of this year.

Call said: "We are pleased with the record operating results achieved this year as both our established stores and more recently opened units continue to make good progress. "During the second quarter the company absorbed a substantial portion of the expenses associated with the transition of the 15 acquired Pay Less stores to Sav-On operation. The Pay Less stores; acquired March 6 of this year, will contribute sales of about $38 million in 1978, but are not expected to contribute significantly to earnings until 1979. "Through the second quarter of 1978, the former Pay Less stores have contributed $10,986,000 to our sales In 1978 the company expects, to open 10 new stores, including the first Sav-On stores in the Nevada market where two openings are scheduled in Las Vegas. Three more Las Vegas stores will be opened in 1979.

This year to date a total of three stores have been opened in the cities of Poway, Huntington Beach and Simi Valley. One older store in Burbank was closed during the second quarter. "We expect further gains in the second half of 1978 with continued healthy economic conditions and as Sav-On enhances its market position," Call said. Gov. Edmund Brown Jr.

McMurtry has been named president of Vista Computer Co. The Torrance firm assembles and distributes mass memory systems nationwide, mainly through computer stores. Before becoming president of Vista, McMurtry was product manager, Randal Data Systems Inc. and national manager, Building Materials Industry Management Control System, a complete software package used to institute computer control over various aspects of business in that field.

The software is owned by Randal Data Systems which also is sole owner of Vista. Vista's mass memory systems include the CPM Operating system, one of the two most common in the minicomputer industry. In conjunction with its products, Vista has announced plans to serve as a clearing house for new developments in CPM software and C-basic, which it offers as an option. McMurtry believes the most innovative field in computers is that of the microcomputer. "The industry is making.

drastic improvements about every three months," he says. Because of the low cost of systems and the en-. thusiasm of thousands of engineers who are "tinkering" with new ways to achieve various performance goals, "It's not going take long for the micros to catch up with the minis." Headquarters of the company is at 2807 Oregon Court. Distribution pact signed by Wyle Wyle: Laboratories' distribution group has signed a distributor agreement with Dataproducts Woodland Hills. Both are high-speed, lowcost printers for use in: small business systems, terminal systems and a growing range of other mini and microcomputer based applications. With the addition of the Dataproducts printers, the Wyle distribution.

group continues its expansion of System product lines available off-the-shelf, including technical support. The Wyle group is taking orders now on the new printers, with availability in September at all six of its divisions. The Wyle distribution group is comprised of Elmar Electronics in Mountain View, on the San Francisco peninsula, and Denver, and Liberty Electronics in El Segundo, Phoenix, San Diego and Seattle. the U.S. subsidiary of the world's sixth largest tire maker.
