Daily. Breeze Torrance California Aug. 2, 1973 54 (Sunday pays off again By Bart Reynolds Sunday racing's "phase two," the introduction of Sabbath competition at Del Mar, appears to have been a rousing success following the pattern of the recent record Hollywood Park session. Del Mar officials were beaming as they looked at the weekend totals 36,385 people and -pari-mutuel -handle of $3,662,264. After comparing the first five days of last season with the first four and the sixth (the Tuesday replaced by Sunday), the smiles were even broader.

Attendance is up 10 per cent, handle about 17. There was no apparent decline in the Monday count. In Southern California, at least, it appears Sunday racing is here to stay, much to the delight of all concerned. Other areas are beginning 1 to join the parade. Pennsylvania awaits the signing of a Sunday racing bill by its governor, and reportedly Sabbath racing in the Keystone State will become a reality within the month.

Kennedy Road, the Hollywood Gold Cup champ, apparently made a believer of many of his doubters with his victory in the San Diego "I may have lost 10 lengths," said Bill referring to being carried wide at the turn for home when New Prospect took dead saim on the blue Pacific. Kennedy Road packed 126 pounds in winning, where will the weight-o-meter stop when imposts are assigned for his next outing, the -Cabrillo Handicap on Aug. 18? Don't be. surprised if the poundage forces trainer to keep the Canadian speedball in the barn. Looked as if super sidewheeler Sir Dalrae was 1.

destined for a season of idleness due to a lack of competition, until they uncovered enough brave rivals to form an overnight race last weekend at Maywood Park. Jim Dennis finally got Sir Dalrae back in the harness, and the Inglewood-owned whiz zipped to -win, scoring. four lengths. It was his 12th triumph in 15 starts this year, and his seventh in a row. Sir Dalrae might have improved on that mark, but his previous three engagements were cancelled due to lack of competition.

Racing in the colors of Southland restauren- teur Bill Smith, Sir Dalrae now has been clocked -in 2:00 or better nine times, and he should be at a peak for his initial Western Harness start, the final leg of the $160,000 Pacing Championship "Sept. 8. 18 Aaron Jones, the Eugene lumberman -who hoped to have a Derby contender in the Sword Dancer colt, Tumalo, knew what to do when that one was sidelined and missed the Hollywood Derby. Jones, who isn't known to shy at the cash register, whipped out a couple of mil and picked up the pink slip on Linda's Chief. He collected a minor return on his investment when the sophomore won a recent non-betting test at Monmouth Park.

Linda's Chief reportedly will tackle a strong field in the $100,000 Monmouth Invitational Saturday. His foes will include Big Whippendeal, who shipped east from the Charlie Whittingham barn. Whittingham reportedly will inherit Linda's Chief for the 1974 Santa Anita meet. Just what Charlie needs, another biggie. Duncan McDonald, the Mary Jones of the: suiny set, apparently has made up with Joe O'Brien, whom he replaced as the driver-trainer of millionaire Fresh Yankee, after O'Brien had developed the trotting mare into one of racing's all-time greats.

MacDonald, who owns the current sophomore pacing star, Ambro Nesbit, has sent him to "Little Joe." O'Brien already had the promising Melvin's Woe in his barn, but now he has two shots at such classics as the Little Brown Jug and Western Harness' $100,000 Shapiro Stakes. Bobby Frankel narrowly missed a pair of personal highs he dearly would love to achieve as tore Del Mar apart during the opening week. Frankel admitted to confidents that he has never won as many as four races on a single program, and has never swept the daily double events. Brooklyn Bobby collected three wins on the Saturday card and was close to both goals. Prima Volta was runner -up in the opener and Frankel's Great Expectation took the second.

He then picked up wins with Expression and Ice Cap, but lost a chance for the elusive number four when Lucky Hayes was nosed out in the eighth race. The Dan Lasater Stable, which appeared briefly at the Hollywood Park meet, has lost a number of wins this season because of the riding of oft-suspended Lou Spindler, the stable jockey. Saturday, trainer David Vance took the string's Indiana-bred juvenile filly Honky Star to Monmouth Park for the rich Sorority. She was 45- the longest priced starter in the star-studded field, but Honky Star turned them back, only to have her number taken down for causing interference in the stretch.
