WAXA Welcomes Rivers To Late-Night Lineup

WAXA Welcomes Rivers To Late-Night Lineup Fox Broadeasting Company, the new socalled "fourth network." makes its broadcast debut in the Anderson area Thursday when "The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers" appears at 11 p.m. on WAXA TV. Channel 40. But for WAXA, the only television station in Anderson, the live, hour telecast from Hollywood takes an added one dimension, as Channel 40 also is FBC's sole affiliate in the GreenvilleSpartanburg Asheville, N.C.. viewing area, which is among the top 50 nationally. The independent station, which will expand into a new market Nov. 1 when its telecasts are picked up by Asheville Cablevision (Channel 34), will become the be. neficiary of around 21.000 new viewers all due to its exclusive area rights to FBC programming. WAXA- TV Promotion Director Kathy Kupris says. "We're ecstatic to get the expanded viewership," Ms. Kupris says. "And the added prestige we receive, as an Anderstation out into new son markets with this exclusive programming, is also significant for Anderson, we feel. "Fox has said it is committed to networkquality programming prime-time blocks of new shows from 8 to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and 7 to 10 p.m. on Sundays, beginning in March based upon the track record of the producers alone, I'd say that these new shows will be competitive," Ms. Kurpis says. Among the new slate of shows previewing in March will be several half-hour comedies and both half hour and hour dramas, many of which are still in the concept stage, an FBC release states. Among the producers for the new Spring shows are Stephen J. Cannell (*'The A- Team" and "The Rockford Files"), Gary David Goldberg ("Family Ties" and "Lou Grant") and Howard Gerwitz ("Taxi"), Ms. Kupris adds that WAXA officials have recently discussed expanding their programming services, which could inelude a locally-produced news program "somewhere down the road.' "Sure, it's something we've talked about." Ms. Kupris says. "But I just can't say when something like that would happen whether it's six weeks from now. six months from now, or a year or two from now. Asheville Cablevision Marketing Director Doug Benton says that WAXA's success in landing FBC was only one of the reasons his cable company chose to pick up the station. "WAXA was not a must-carry (station) with us." Benton says. "But with the addition of Fox to their programming, along with their promise of carrying other cableexclusive products, we see a young, energetic television station capable of providing some darned good new quality products.' Meanwhile, FBC's early hopes ride solely on the "can-we-talk?" weeknight chitchat of Ms. Rivers and her guests. "*The Late Show" competes against 'The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers' 40 Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show.' which appears at 11:30 p.m. (EST) each weeknight on NBC. Scheduled guests for Thursday night's opener include Cher, Elton John. Pee Wee Herman and rock singer David Lee Roth, who is scheduled to perform at Clemson University's Littlejohn Coliseum Oct. 25. Carson's guests for the opening night of the talk-show war will be Richard Pryor, Sean Penn and saxaphonist Kenny G. By Don Brickner Staff Writer Rivers' departure from "The Tonight Show." where she had been permanent substitute host, was not a friendly one. NBC dropped her the day Fox announced her new show in May. Carson was angered that she had not told him of her plans. Rivers felt her work on "The Tonight Show" wasn't appreciated.
