The advance went to the 5-yard line. but the Moccasin reserves turned it back there and the whistle ended the game on the second play after the Petrel had lost the ball on downs. Overmyer Takes Praise On His Great Punting. For outstanding brilliance in allaround play, Donny Overmyer was king for the fifty-five minutes he played. A steady plugger who usually plays his hand close to his vest, this young citizen stepped out to grab a place in the middle of the calcium light in this last game of the season. If he hadn't returned a single punt; if he had fumbled on half his plays: if he had pulled all the "boners" quarterbacks can pull. and if he had played a miserable game in every other department. his punting made him one of the best ground gainers of the game. is nothOvermyer's magic in booting ing short of phenomenal. It is the product of one short season's practice, showing that the lad is a natural punter extraordinary. It was his overwhelming edge in kicking over the best Oglethorpe could muster that gave Moccasins the first advantage, the edge that broke the Petrel resistance in the opening quarter. The statistical average credited to Overmyer, who did all the Moccasin punting, is 42 yards, and since one or two of his boots went 8 or 10 yards short of that figure, the rest were well up around 50 yards. His finest punt of the game went for 60 yards and rolled out of bounds on the Oglethorpe 2 2-yard line, but it was brought back because a Moccasin lineman had overstepped the bounds and bent the ball, The Moccasins gained on. every exchange of punts and in the process beat Oglethorpe at the Petrels' own game. The Moccasin coaches, picked up the idea of a quick the OglethorpeTech game when Garlington, for Oglethorpe, used it to advantage. Since the game Overmyer had been trained to pull the same play, and he did it to perfection yesterday. In addition to his fine punting, Oevrmyer played his best other departments, blocking like a big 180- pounder. lugging back Petrel punts with a skill he had not shown heretofore, and the while running his machine with a master's hand. It was great day for Overmyer, n day which, had it been repeated twice or three times during the earlier part of the season, would have won him undisputed place on anybody's allsouthern eleven. No college punter could beat. and few could equal. Overmyer's artistic punting of yesterday. If anything else had been equal it WITH TRIUMPH Defeat Oglethorpe Petrels, 19 to 0, in Classic. TEAM IS UNDEFEATED IN GAMES OF S. I. A. A. Sixth Consecutive Association Victory Gives Chattanooga Good Claim to Mythical Championship. A glorious football campaign came to a close yesterday afternoon at Chamberlain field when the University of Chattanooga Moccasins whipped the Stormy Petrels Oglethorpe, 19 to 0. It the eighth straight victory of WAST the season for Chattanooga and the sixth straight in S. I. thus ending the second cOnsecutiecles. defeated year for the Moccasins within the Southern association. It the second undefeatable season, but waste impressive than the other for its entire lack of those tie games that marred the 1926 record. In the six victories over other S. I. A. A. teams, the absence of ties, the victory over V. P. I., of the Southern conference and over William and Mary, the Moccasins present to the world one of the strongclaims to the mythical title of champions of the Southern association. If the Moccasins, are not ranked in the champions this -there's no justice. Four Moccasins ended their dealings with football yesterday and took off after the thing was over. None of their Moccasin jerseys for the last time. four, Dale Viers, Austin Smith, Red Scott, Hay Fennell, played more brilliantly at any point during their long Moccasin careers than they did yesterday when they were out there doing things for Chattanooga on the gridiron for the last time. Though they will not appear again in Moccasin line-ups their names are automatically written into the Moccasin line-up. son broke several records. the This last game of the Mopensin, seafirst time in five years Chattanooga has been able to beat Oglethorpe. It Was the first time Chattanooga has won six consecutive S. I. A. A. victories. It was the first time the Moccasin has been undefeated and untied in a S. I. A. A. season. Also it was the first time during the ending season that the Moccasins have kept their goal line intact. The Petrel inust have left something down on Grant field after its brilliant game against Georgia Tech, for the Storm Bird was far from the Bird of other years. There WAS little in the display shown by Oglethorpe yesterday to recall to the minds of the thousands of local fans those games of other years when Oglethorpe swept the Moccasins before a brilliant performance of broken field running. Other than momentary bits of stepping by Garlington, Fox and Martin there was little to recall the days of Adrian Maurer, Cy Bell and Nutty Campbell. The Petrel has fallen upon slim days, but the Petrel of 1927. though it had been inspired with the spirit of other years, would been outclassed by the Moccasins yesterday. Moccasins Had Good Time; Enjoyed Every Minute. The Moccasins, with thoughts of broken routine just ahead, within sight of the end of what has been a punishing gridiron season and with the smell of victory in their nostrils, played football as if football was the most pleasurable pastime in the world. From start to finish the Moccasins had a picnic out on the field- a picnic at the expense of the Petrels. There was a feeling along the sidelines that if it had been necessary, or even desirable, the Moccasins could have beaten Oglethorpe by six touchdowns instead of three. In the late periods, before the reserves replaced all the first string Moccasins the Chattanooga players seemed to have lost all their usual desperate interest in the game. They were having too good a time, and Coach Thomas. therefore. rushed in his second outfit to keep the Moccasins from making a circus out of the ball game. First Period Scoreless: Lautzy Makes Touchdown. The first quarter was scoreless, with the Petrel outgaining the Moccasiu from scrimmage, but Overmyer's big edge in the punting keeping things even. At the start of the second quarter Capt. Lautzenheiser replaced Smith at halfback. Milt Thompson blocked Garlington'« punt soon after the start of the period and Magevney recovered for Chattanooga on Oglethorpe's 10-yard and the ball line. Four playa, gained but Oglethorpe on her own 1-yard line lefensive stand. After the punt-out Barrett and Ward, the other two first-string Moecasin backs, entered the game. Lautzenheiser and Barrett then alternated in hitting the tackles and, aided by a pass, Lautzy to Groeschell, carried the ball to the 5-yard line, whence Lautzenheiser carried it across on an offtackle smash. Overmyer passed to Ward for the extra point. Amos Martin took the succeeding Moccasin kick-off and lugged it back 47 yards in one of the prettiest runs of the game. starting a Petrel advance which stopped at the 12-yard line when Barrett intercepted pass. One of the best gainers in the Petrel advance was n 16-yard pass, Vaughn to Hancock. The half ended with the Moccasins leading, 7 to 0. Soon after the opening of the third period Cassidy, for Chattanooga. recovered a Petrel fumble at midfield. The Moccasin failed of first down and punted. Vaughn fumbled on his own 5-yard line and Groeschell recovered for Chattanooga, but Oglethorpe braced and held for downs, taking the ball and punting out. The kick was hurried and short and Overmyer returned 15 yards to the Petrel 25-yard line. Here a pass, Lautzenheiser to Barrett. was good for the second touchdown. Overmyer missed the try for point. Just before the end of the third quar ter a freak pass was completed by the Moccasins for first down on the Petrel 12-yard line. The toss was meant for Barrett, but Vaughn batted it into the hands of Magerney. The Petrel held momentarily, but Coach Thomas sent and the Moccasin full back plunged to the 4-yard line and then caught a pass for the third touch down. A complete team of reserves took the field for Chattanooga at this point in the last quarter and the Petrel took advantage of the difference to sweep up the field. Burford recovered a fumbled punt at midfield and White and Fox 2 a Vaughn (with his straight arm (No. 3) on top of Bill Ward, who MOCCASINS KEPT EDGE OVER PETREL THROUGHOUT GAME Chattanooga maintained an unmistakable margin of superiority over Oglethorpe all during yesterday's game. Statistics show eleven Moccasin first downs against nine for the Petrel, and a total of 251 yards gained from scrimmage by Chattanooga against 214 for Oglethorpe. Chattanooga used Oglethorpe, 71. In punting. Chattanooga had an edge of 13 yards on the average, Overmyer's six punts going a for 252 yards and the Petrels' eight going 230 yards, the average being 29 against 42 for Chattanooga. Chattanooga completed 6 out of 13 passes for 88 yards and Oglethorpe completed 2 out of 5 for 35 yards. One Oglethorpe pass was intercepted. Oglethorpe fumbled twice; Chattanooga. once. The Moccasins were taxed with nine penalties for 55 yards and Oglethorpe took 6 penalties for 40 yards. Chattanooga backs were thrown four times for A11 aggregate of 23 yards and Petrel backs lost 22 yards on six plays. Chattanooga kicked off four times for 210 yards; Oglethorpe. once for 60 yards. Oglethorpe returned Chattanooga kickoffs three times for 89 yards and the Petrel kickoff was a touchback. punts for 33 OgleChattanooga returned, three thorpe returned two for 20. The Moccasin line played a surprising game of football. Before yesterday's game the fans came out to Chamberlain field with confident expectation of seeing the invading team rip through for many gains and at least one score, but yesterday there was no touchdown scored against the Moccasins. Those who remember the havoc wrought by the spinning Petrel offense in the ranks of the Moccasin defense last year were astounded to see the same plays piled up yesterday by the hard-charging Moccasin forwards. The goal line stand of the Moccasin reserre line in the last few minutes of would have given Chattanooga sufficient margin to bring victory. Moccasin Line Holds Opponent for First Time.
