26 Jan 1901 Washington Times (DC) Kidnap effort Delta Psi

TRIED TO KIDNAP A STUDENT. Williams College Man the Vietim of a Mysterions Episode. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., Jan. 25.-Williams College students are much upset by a mysterious attempt made this evening to kidnap one of their members. While R. H. Rogers, of Rochester, N. Y., a member of the Delta Psi Fraternity, was walking in Spring Street a closed carriage stopped suddenly in front of him, four IRen jumped out, seized him, hustled him into the carriage, and drove away. Starley Washburn, another student, saw the affair, secured a revolver and another rig, and started in pursuit. The carriage containing Rogers rattled away toward South Williamstown. Washburn overtook it a mile out of town and fired two shots at the occupants. Thereupon the carriage was stopped and Rogers was thrown into the road. Washburn picked him up and while he was attending to him the carriage was driven away. No pursuit was attempted. Rogers was brought back to the college. He had been roughly treated and was faint. At midnight it was said that nothing serious had befallen him except the results of a rough shaking up. The motive for this kidnaping is unknown. Rogers is not the son of wealthy parents, and the idea of ransom is laughed at. and no reason known why the students should play a practical joke upon him. Both Rogers and Washburn say that the occupants of the carriage were men, and entire strangers to them.
