State Dedicates Its Third Educational TV Station SAVANNAH (P--Georgia's third was dedicated Thursday. Gov. Carl Sanders and former Gov. Ernest Vandiver spoke at ceremonies dedicating WVAN-TV. named in honor of Vandiver, under whose administration the state's educational TV system was started. Vandiver said the new station, located at nearby Pembroke, and a fourth one to be opened later this year atop Pine Mountain, will give Georgia the lead in educational TV. Eleven such stations have been proposed for Georgia and Sanders said all would be in operation by 1967. The two already functioning are at Athens and Waycross. Dr. Claude Purcell, states superintendent of schools, introduced Vandiver at the ceremony which was attended by hundreds of residents and school leaders from over the state. The Pembroke station will go on the air on channel nine on. Monday morning with classroom educational television station | instruction. Evening programs will include a variety of entertainment for adults. Sanders told the audience the state can have the finest educational TV setup in the world for less than the cost of a pair of shoes for each child in school. The governor said that possibly no development of the second half of the 20th Century holds greater promise for the improvement of public education than educational television. He said it serves to offset the inexperience of new teachers and to supplement the limited background of others. "It is my personal view," Sanders said, "that educational television has great potential for helping alleviate the teacher shortage, at least on a satisfactory, stop-gap basis." He said the ETV network also would provide a more effective means of disseminating information about public programs of the state.
