BEATEN Catches Buckeye Team On Rebound And Loses, 17-0 By JACK OVERMYER, Star Sports Writer Bloomington, Ind., Oct. 16-A team, whose regulars plainly man" performances, was knocked list today by a sharp Ohio State The Buckeyes, rebounding in Conference loss to Iowa, won by It was a sad homecoming for most of the 33,000 fans who packed Memorial Stadium to see Ohio State pay a visit for the first time in 13 years. Leaden skies, which kept their rain but hampered visibility in the game's later stages, matched the alumni mood. • Indiana won its first two Conference games, with practically reserve help and generally was expected to break under the effort at some time. But no such Picture on Page 4 dismal performance as today's was anticipated. THE BUCKS, who scored two touchdowns the first two times the Hoosiers relinquished the ball, held Indiana within its own 50 yards for 47½ consecutive minutes. Early in the fourth quarter George Taliaferro uncorked a 37- yard pass to End Ernie Kovatch, a sophomore, to move to the Ohio 47. That's the closest Hoosiers ever got to the goal line and they were there just about a minute. two offside penalties in three plays putting them back on their own 47 and forcing them to punt. Ohio's sturdy defense and Indiana's lack of blocking combined to hold the Hoosiers to a scandalous net rushing gain of 18 yards. They got those 18 in the first half, during which time they passed but once and failed to complete it. The second half was the reverse- no net gain by rushing and 94 yards through the air. The Buckeyes, meanwhile, turned loose Halfback Jimmy Clark, a hard-driving Negro; Fullback Whisler and HalfJohan back Rod Swinehart to lead 247-yard rushing gain, plus 91 more passing. CLARK WAS THE big man in the first touchdown drive. Taliaferro punted after the two opening plays and Clark fumbled the ball on his own 36, Center Joe Polce falling on it for the Hoosiers there. However, here poped up the first of a long line of penalties which were to stall what Indiana drives Ohio couldn't handle. The Hoosiers were called for holding on the play and Ohio given the ball on the 36. It took the Buckeyes eight plays and a five -yard offside penalty to go yards. Clark got 17 yards in two plays, took a 14-yard pass from Pandel Savic and then let Alex Verdova move to the one-yard line on two more catches from the Yugoslaviaborn Buckeye quarterback. From there Whisler bulled over and End Jim Hague made it 7 to 0 with only five minutes gone. Holding on, Indiana set up the Bucks' second drive right afterward. Taliaferro got off a 50- yard punt which rolled dead on the Ohio 20, but had to do it over again from his 25 because of holding. That time. he booted, it out of bounds on the 50 had gained 30 yards without touching the ball. It was a third and 12 situation because of offside and the completion got the Bucks to Indiana's 24. Clark went inside the Hoosiers' left end to the 16, I.U. was penalized to the 11 for having 12 men on the field and Clark skipped through the right side from there. Hague made it 14 to 0. The other three points came on a field goal from the 10-yard line by late in the final quarter. Another Ohio State march 'carried 66 yards to the Indiana four, to meet stiff resistance. Hague added the bonus points on fourth down. Clyde Smith, the Indiana coach, said before the game that he was going to substitute- regardlessin order to give his regulars relief and his squad experience. Smitty used 25 men. The influx of sophomores can be held partly responsible for the poor showing, Clark giving the end substitutes a particularly hard time. ONLY TWICE, besides the pass which got them to Ohio's 47, did the Hoosiers look like they were going any place. Quarter Back Nick Sebek intercepted an Ohio toss in his own end zone in the second quarter and ran it out to the five, After but got the ball 21. when two plays the Hoosiers, punted Ohio was called for clipping. Here Taliaferro made his longest run of the day-11 yards -but then couldn't get any blocking and hand to kick it away again. The other occasion came in the third period when Dorsey took a 25-yard pass from Savic to advance. to the Hoosier five. That time the Hoosiers wouldn't yield. Fulback Chick Jagade spilled Jerry Krall for a yard loss and Guard Walt Bartkiewicz got through to nail Whisler for six more. Too much time on the Bucks pushed them further back to the 17 and then Krall missed the pass from center and Kovatch nailed him on the 30. INDIANA BEGAN to roll, even though Taliaferro lost 12 yards on the first play trying to find a receiver. Goldston got that 12 back on a screen pass play and two more runs made it first down on the 41. Sebek rifled a hard pass over the line to End Francis Carter and the ball popped in and out of his hands--right into the arms of Ohio's Billy Newell. Penalties mostly offside and backs in motion--helped stymie the Hoosiers, on other occasions. They nicked 80 yards on them altogether. Taliaferro, the league's total Turn to Page 4, Column 4
