Another Toronto win for Michael Andretti

Another Toronto win for Michael Andretti By Frank Luba Sports Reporter TORONTO - Call it a natural hat trick for Michael Andretti. The hard-driving defending champion of the IndyCar circuit won his third-consecutive Molson Indy Toronto Sunday before a record crowd of 65,094 for the final day of competition at the Canadian National Exhibition site. To do so, Andretti took the lead on a wild first lap and withstood a challenge first from young Canadian Paul Tracy and then from veteran Bobby Rahal. Rahal took over second place when gearbox trouble took Tracy, ROAD TO VANCOUVER 1992 INDYCAR SCHEDULE Date Event, Winner March 22 Australia, Emerson Fittipaldi April 5 Phoenix, Bobby Rahal April 12 Long Beach, Calif., Danny Sullivan May 24 Indianapolis, Al Unser Jr. June 7 Detroit, Bobby Rahal June 21 Portland, Michael Andretti June 28 Milwaukee, Michael Andretti July 5 Loudon, N.H., Bobby Rahal July 19 Toronto, Michael Andretti Date Event Defending champion Aug. 2 Brooklyn, Mich., Rick Mears Aug. 9 Cleveland, Michael Andretti Aug. 23 Elkhart Lake, Wis., Michael Andretti Aug. 30 Vancouver, Michael Andretti Sept. 13 Lexington, Ohio, Michael Andretti Oct. 4 Nazareth, Pa., Arie Luyendyk Oct. 18 Monterey, Calif., Michael Andretti 23, out of the race after just a third of the 103 laps. The PPG IndyCar World Series points standings leader and co-owner of his own team finished second, the only other driver on the same lap as Andretti. In third was Danny Sullivan, with Andretti's father Mario fourth after a collision that dropped Indianapolis 500 champion Al Unser Jr. to seventh place. John Andretti, Michael's cousin and Mario's nephew, claimed fifth and Canadian Scott Goodyear survived a war of attrition and what he described as a "nervous car" to finish sixth. Also surviving that attrition while fighting the pain of a bad back was Vancouver's Ross Bentley, who placed 14th in the 25-car field and was the last entry still running when Andretti took the checkered flag. Emerson Fittipaldi, sitting No. 2 on the grid beside polewinner Rahal, jumped to the front at the start of Sunday's race but appeared to miss a shift going into Turn 3. That allowed Andretti to pass, with Tracy in hot pursuit and Rahal next. Andretti led the rest of the race. "It was a wild first lap,' said Rahal. "I'm pretty happy my car survived that first lap." The same might hold true in the E A mar # 1 SON ORT MO -Y Winner Michael Andretti (left) and runner-up Bobby Rahal share a light moment after they points race. Andretti's win moved him into second place in the PPG standings behind Rahal (134-100) to continue a pursuit of the leader reminiscent of the charge he kicked off with last season's victory in Toronto. "It's going to be tough, Bobby is running really strong,' said Andretti of an IndyCar title defence. "All we can do is keep trying to win." Victory was also at the forefront of Tracy's thinking. "I really feel I had a shot at winning the race," said the test-driver and protege of IndyCar kingpin TOTAL Reuter photo are unable to open their champagne bottles after Sunday's IndyCar race in Toronto. Roger Penske. "It was only a matter of time," said Tracy. "We were right there in the thick of the battle.' "It was a disappointing weekend overall," said Goodyear of his road-course woes. "When you can't be up at the front then you can only collect some points." That's what the Newmarket resident did, of course, moving to sixth place in the points standings. Bentley's battle for funding got a boost from his finish but a blow when teammate Eric Bachelart strained the Dale Coyne crew's resources by crashing his car. Despite that, and a back aching from a March operation, Bentley remains optimistic. "I'm just that much better prepared for the next race," he said. OFF THE TRACK - Sunday's IndyCar win was the third in four starts for the new slim-line Ford Cosworth engine and gives the Ford a decided advantage in the 1992 engine wars. The previously dominant Chevrolet has led 512 laps while Ford, championed in its new form by Michael and Mario Andretti, along with ninth-place finisher Eddie Cheever, has led 736.
