Lane, Agajanian Star in Workout

LANE, AGAJANIAN STAR IN WORKOUT BY FRANK FINCH, Times Train REDLANDS. July 23-Night Lane, Bootin' Ben Agajanian, Elroy Hirsch and Dan Towler turned in scintillating performances this morning as Hamp Pool sent the Los Angeles Rams through R rugged scrimmage. With Pool trying out place-kicking line-up, which includes the biggest bulls in camp, Lane streaked in from right janian's end to block two of Agafield goal attempts, and came within a whisker of blocking most of the others. Agajanian Connects "Night Train has the reflexes of a cat," said the beaming Ram coach. "It just doesn't seem possible that a man can come in from so far out and set in front of the ball in a matter of a couple of seconds." He also was proud of the fact that Agajanian made good on all of the field goals that Lane didn't block. With Glenn Davis and Vitamin Smith alternating as ball-holder, Aggie clicked on 13 of 15 attempts from 30 yards out. Line Specialists we're passing the compliments around, let's hear what Aggie has to say about his caddies: "Smith and Davis are the two best holders I've ever seen. Every ball is teed up perfectly when they handle it. It is remarkable that one team has two such specialists. Incidentally, Leon McLaughlin centers the ball perfectly, too, and that's important." Pool's nine man line for placements, from left to right, included Johnny Hock, 235; Charley Toogood, 230; Verdese Carter, 250; Jim Winkler, 250; McLaughlin. 225: Tom Palmer, 215; Len Teewus, 240: Tom Dahms, 235, and Harry Thompson, 225. When placements are called for in Saturday night's intrasquad game here, Pool intends to move Hock and Thompson to their regular guard spots flanking McLaughlin. That will leave Toogood and Dahms on the outside. Later on, probably by the time the Rains meet the Washington Redskins on Aug. 19 in Staff Representative the Coliseum, 245-pound Bud McFadin will replace Thompson in this line up. Bud recently underwent a foot operation and won't he ready for a few weeks. With McFadin in there the human iron curtain will: average about 230 pounds per hieiman. Hirsch Clicks Midway through this mornling's scrum and, mind you. against the No. 1 defensivel unit, Hirsch broke loose to spear Norm Van Brocklin's long pass and traveled 80 yards for a "touch." "It was the softest pass Dutch ever threw me." Crazy Legs remarked. "It felt like a feather. He's the best." Moments later, Towler, king of the league's ground gainers, crashed up the middle on a quick trap and rambled 33 yards for another theoretical tally. Aside from these two scoring thrusts, the defense definitely dominated play. Pool was tickled with the results produced by Defensive Coaches Buck Weaver and. Dick Voris. The session was limited offense. On afternoon, the first play Dutch and Crazy Legs got together on an 80- yard scorer. Rookie Herb Agocs of Penn also took one of Dutch's longies for a tally. The Rams' NFL passing champion completed 20 of-28 passes. Tough Going Rookies Rudy Bukich and Bob Gambold found it tough going with defensive lineman charging in. Gambold completed three of seven pass attempts and had one intercepted, The cx-Trojan hit on only two of seven and had one swiped by Woodley Lewis, who ran it back 55 vards to a touchdown. In Saturday night's tussle Pool will send his No. 1 offensive team against his second defensive unit and then switch to his second offensive unit against his defensive regulars. He said that there positively will be no rookies' vs. veterans' competition. would he like tossing 22 strange bulldogs in rain barrel. Somehody might get maimed for life. of
