1983 Cornell-Cincinnati

UC Lets Cornell Off With 48-20 Beating BY TERRY FLYNN Enquirer Reporter The University of Cincinnati Bearcats had trouble handling prosperity Saturday afternoon. Everything was a little too easy at Riverfront Stadium as they pounded Cornell, 48-20. The Bearcats, evening their record at 2-2, had a 34-point advantage 14 seconds into the third quarter and decided to back off and relax. "I think we lost some intensity in the third quarter," junior quarterback Troy Bodine explained. "It's hard to maintain that kind of intensity when you're leading, 41-7. This is a young team, and that has a lot to do with it." Although UC had to settle for Mike Morton field goals on its first two scoring opportunities, it was painfully obvious that the Big Red was grossly overmatched against the Bearcats. "When you play somebody who isn't as good as you are . . I'm not trying to take anything away from Cornell because they played hard," UC coach Watson Brown said. "But you have to go right out and get them down early. You can't take any chances." BROWN WATCHED the Bearcats swarm all over Cornell in the first half and then lighten up offensively and defensively in the second. But he wasn't overly concerned. "When we went up, 41-7, things started to get a little sloppy," he said. "They (Cornell) were blitzing on every play, which is what you have to do when you're behind. We started backing off and letting them get too much yardage." But Cornell's yardage-164 on the ground and 115 passing -couldn't match the UC attack. Finally, in the fourth game, Brown has begun to zero in on a running attack that works, and he made the most of the Big Red's porous defense. Freshman tailback Reggie Taylor, who was eased into the lineup a week ago against Louisville, started again this week and amazed most of the sparse crowd of 13,840 with 181 yards on 20 carries. "The little guy did a great job," Brown said of Taylor, who measures 5-7 and weighs 170. "He's tough as nails. He had a couple of runs where he made the yardage right through the defense, . it looked once like all 11 guys had him." On UC's first possession, Taylor had a 52- On The Inside • Notre Dame bounces back, 27-3, Page B-8. • Ohio State routs Minnesota, 69-18, Page B-9. • Michigan hammers Indiana, 43-18, Page B-9. yard gainer, and he ran 36 yards on a sweep for a touchdown late in the first quarter as the Bearcat offensive line blew defenders out of his way. "I MUST commend my line," the Lynwood, Cal., native said with a grin. "There were some big holes there. They (offensive linemen) really opened things up." Taylor gained 70 yards against Louisville, and he said Saturday he "felt I could have done better in that game. I was determined to prove myself this week. I set a goal of gaining 200 yards, and I think I might have been able to do it." But after Malcolm Darden sprinted 95 yards to the end zone with the kickoff to open the third quarter, Brown decided to maintain a low key approach and play basic football. "You might not have been able to see it all the time, but we were very basic in the second half," the UC coach said. "We were just pitching right and pitching left. Nothing fancy." Bodine did something fancy Saturday, something Brown has been anxious to see since the start of the season -he ran with the ball. In fact, he was the Bearcats' second leading rusher with five carries for 48 yards and two touchdowns. FOLLOWING A short kickoff which gave UC possession at its 35, Bodine moved the team to the 41 where he came up with a perfect bootleg play which carried for 41 yards and a touchdown. "It was a completely naked play all the way," Bodine said. "But I always have that option. That time, we caught them (Cornell) going with the play (tailback) the other way, and I was all alone." Brown said he planned to emphasize the running game, both because it was a necessary part of the offense and because he anticipated heavy pass coverage by the Big Red. (See BEARCATS, Page B-3)
