Talks with disc jockey signal format change for KNNN

Talks with disc jockey signal format change for KNNN he odds that Spanish-language T mats KNNN when (FM 99.9) will change takes fornew ownership over later this winter are increasing. Bill Andres, formerly part of a morning team with John Giese at rock outlet KDKB (FM 93.3), may be the lead-off announcer. The sale of KNNN is contingent upon Federal Communications Commission approval, but Andres confirmed this week that he has talked to Eric Hauenstein about a job. Hauenstein and partner Robert Herpe are buying KNNN for about $4 million from Julia Zozaya. "T have not signed any contract with Eric - yet," reported Andres, who said he has had several conversations with Hauenstein. Andres, who split with Giese and KDKB back in August after an association of nearly five years, said he also has been talking to three other stations. "I'm in a similar position with more than one," he said. "I haven't committed to anything yet." (Andres is known to have had conversations with contemporary KKLT and country KJJJ: KKLT or K- Lite reportedly was put off by the bucks he was asking and a fear that his prior success in the market was due to his partnership with Giese, who was given a new teammate in Tim any light on Hauenstein's plans. "I can't tell you what he's going to do," he said. Hauenstein, who was co-owner of KDKB between 1971 and 1978, could not be reached for comment. In an interview last fall, he said considerable research would be taken before any decision is made. A format switch by KNNN would leave the Valley with two Spanish stations, KVVA (860 AM) and KPHX (1480 AM), serving the market's more than 300,000 Hispanic residents. Something About Amelia, the ABC Theater presentation Monday night that centered on incest, sensitively handled a sensitive subject. And it proved to be a success in terms of viewership and response. ABC declared Tuesday that the twohour drama was one of the most-watched TV movies ever, attracting an estimated 60 million viewers. Overnight ratings in six cities showed that 51 percent of the homes tuned in to Amelia. More importantly, Something About Amelia, which aired locally on KTVK-TV (Channel 3), resulted in a deluge of phone calls to child-abuse centers across the country from people asking advice or Hattrick; KJ decided to hire former country disc jockey Bobby Butler from oldies KOOL-FM.) That Hauenstein is interested in Andres is a strong signal that KNNN will drop the Spanish approach in favor of some contemporary music format in English. FCC approval of sale will likely come next month and, while Hauenstein has not specified (nor can he legally) what approach he will take, only a few programming possibilities exist. With the AM and FM dials filled with 'country stations and rockers, clear format options include news/talk and adultcontemporary. With the former being expensive and a format traditionally found on the AM band, adult-contemporary appears to be a likely direction. However, Andres was unable to shed Bud Wilkinson Television and radio counsel, from adults relating stories of how they had been molested as children and from girls saying they were being victimized. Joe O'Haver, intake supervisor at Child Protective Services in Phoenix, reported that the agency had six volunteers who took 46 calls during and immediately after the movie. By a 28-3 margin, O'Haver said viewers saw Something About Amelia as positive. One case of abuse was reported, which he said is being investigated. Three callers felt the movie needed to present the aspect of boys being abused as children, he said. Something About Amelia dealt with a father who was having an incestuous relationship with his 13-year-old daughter, the impact of his daughter's disclosure of the arrangement, the subseugent counseling and the father's acceptance of blame. Ted Danson, Glenn Close and Roxana Zal (as Amelia) starred. Three promotions have been announced 'at country stations KNIX (1580 AM) and KNIX-FM (102.5) by general manager Michael Owens. Programmer Larry Daniels has been elevated to the post of general program manager, where he will oversee new AM programmer Don Cristi -and new FM programmer Erik Foxx.
