ski resort sold to german man

Ski Resort sold to German man BURKE (AP) - A German businessman has bought the Burke Mountain ski resort and plans to open the lifts by Thanksgiving, officials said Wednesday. The official closing of the sale between new owner, Bernd Schaefers, 49, of Munich, Germany, and First NH Bank Inc. is expected by the first week of December. The sales agreement for the ski resort was signed in Boston on Tuesday. Dieter Dixi Nohl, who has been hired by Schaefers as the general manager, said the sale also included 20 condominium units. The sale price was not disclosed. First NH Bank said it will sign occupancy and use permits for the new owner on Thursday, to clear the way for an early winter opening. Nohl is returning as general manager, : a position he held before Hilco Inc. took over operation of the financially troubled resort from owner Paul Quinn more than a year ago. Advertising for season passes will begin soon, and prices should be published in a week, Nohl said. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the mountain's future and the late start for preparations and advertising, he said he is confident the passes will sell. "We're late but not too late," he said, adding he will begin hiring maintenance and front office workers. Schaefers, who has lived in Bernardsville, N.J. for 12 years, is the co-founder of Neve Constantin Film, the leading film production and distribution firm in Germany, Hilco reported. Schaefers also co-founded Mediapark Cologne, the largest city development in Cologne.
