Rams Overpower Purdue, 17 to 0

Rams Overpower Purdue, 17 to 00 '7 By Jack Smith Through ankle-deep mud and Purdue's hefty forward wall, the undefeated Fordham Rams slithered to a 17-0 victory at the Polo Grounds yesterday as 20,500 spectators huddle din protection agaist a driving rain. Held to a tenyard field goal by Soph George Cheverko for the first half, the Rams roared out for the second and marched to two touchdowns within seven minutes. Rugged Steve Filipowiez crossed ?- AVINAS * m Rugged Steve Filipowiez crossed the line each time, flitting 31 yards for the first score and butting over from the one-foot line for the second. Held without a first down, Purdue made its gravest threat early in the fourth quarter when Chester returned a punt 31 yards to the Fordham 34. FIRST PERIOD The Rams won the toss and elected to kick off. The boot went out of bounds, giving Purdue the ball on it's own 35 but the field was so sloppy, anything in the way of an offense was impossible. Because of the slippery ball, third down punts were in order. Each team did so twice, Fordham's second going into the end zone. On third down, Hudacek broke through and partially blocked Hajzyk's punt. A Purdue player recovered it on his 26 but since it passed the line of scrimmage, it automatically became Fordham's ball. Filipowiez cracked the line three times in succession for 11 yards and a first down on the 15. Andrejco cut back off tackle for 6. In two tries, Filipowiez battered seven yards to a first down on the 2. Andrejco moved it to the six inch line where Blumenstock plowed over on third down but Fordham was penalized five yards for back-in-motion. Blumenstock brought it back to the 2 as the period ended. Score: Fordham 0, Purdue 0. SECOND PERIOD Cheverko was sent in for Blumenstock and on the first play of the period booted a field goal with Noble holding the ball on the 10. Once in the lead, Fordham kept punting on first down, doing so five out of seven times they had the ball for the rest of the period. Blumenstock picked out a super swampy spot around the second base area and kept booting the ball there where the Purdue backs couldn't get their footing. The Rams got a break midway through the period when Chester fumbled a punt and Santilli recovered for Fordham on the Purdue 36. Two plays picked up five yards. A pass, the only one of the period, failed and Blumenstock's fourth down punt was very bad, going out on the Purdue 28. It covered only four yards from scrimmage. Except for that bad one, Blumenstock's kicking and returning of punts was amazing. Late in the period, he got off one boot that went dead on the eight. Chester also did some great punting for the Boilermakers. Score: Fordham 3, Purdue 0. THIRD PERIOD Andrejco returned the kick to the Fordham 42 where Blumenstock got off a beautiful punt which Chester took on the one. On first down, Chester kicked out on the Purdue 42. Fordham scored in four plays. Andrejco bashed tackle for six and Filipowics slipped through center for first down on the 31. Filipowiez then swung wide to his left, cut back inside end, slanted for the right sideline and raced 31 yards for the score without being touched. Cheverko converted. Right after the kick-off, Bennett intercepted a pass for the Rams on the Purdue 25. After Blumenstock was piled up at tackle, Andrejco slithered through center for 20 and a first down on the five. Blumenstock plowed to the one and in two tries, Filipowiez smacked over. Cheverko again converted. A 15-yard penalty for clipping on a punt return sent the Rams back to their own 15 and they stayed deep in their own territory for the rest of the period. Score: Fordham 17, Purdue 0. FOURTH PERIOD A 31-yard punt return by Chester gave Purdue the ball on the | Fordham 34. On two tries Andretich carried to the 22, where he fumbled and Pierce recovered for Fordham. Blumenstock kicked out to the Puddue 43. Shortly later, Blumenstock intercepted a pass and ran 30 yards to the Purdue but the Rams were spotted clipping and were penalized from the point o violation to their own 40, where Blumenstock punted to the Purdue 26. Final score: Fordham 17, Purdue, 0. J., Nov. 1 back Francis Lee in the third defeat a surprisingly stout Big Three battle in the rain and One of Princeton's two safeties Harvard when it was hard pressed FIRST PERIOD Harvard soon threatened, getting possession on Princeton's 34 when Peters fumbled a long punt and Wilson recovered for the Crimson. But after three running plays and an attempted pass failed Princeton took over on its 35, kicking out safely. After another exchange of punts Harvard was forced back into its own territory. Both teams were kicking the wet ball on second down, hoping for a break. Princeton started from its 34 and with Rose slashing off the Harvard tackles, roared to its opponent's 44 before it was forced to punt. Again, just before the period ended, the Tigers had plunged to Harvard's 36. Score: Harvard 0, Princeton 0. SECOND PERIOD Peters of Princeton punted to the Crimson 5. When McKinney attempted to punt from in front of his own goalposts, a swarm of Princeton linemen broke through and the ball smacked big Edwards squarely in the chest, bouncing back into the end zone for an automatic safety. Standing on his 12, Lee of Harvard punted to Princeton's 8. When Van Ness kicked out, Lee caught the ball on the 43 and raced it back to Princeton's 25 before being forced out of bounds. Harvard made only 8 yards in three plunges. Vander Eb went in and attempted a placement from the 26, but it was short and wide. When the half ended Harvard again had fought its way to Princeton's 11.
