Nevers Stops Tiger Hitters In Pinch

22 ST. LOUIS POST- DISPATCH COLLEGE STAR NOW BROWNS' BEST "HOPE" Detroit Held to Two Runs by "Underhand" Hurler, Who Fans Three in One Inning. By Herman Wecke From the college field to the maleagues is a big jump, but jor Ernest Nevers seems to have made the jump successfully. Nevers, whose greatest fame came as an A football star at Leland Stanford, spent a greater portion of the season sitting on the bench. But then something went wrong with the supposed stars of George Sisler's staff. Tom Zachary, who had tolled faithfully. was being bumped regularly; Milton Gaston went down with a lame back. That's the way it went down the line. And then Sister, in desperation, decided that Ernie Nevers had inhaled enough major league knowledge while riding the bench. So Nevers was started. He made first first appearance in Boston, He gained a 5-5 tie. Then the Browns came to St. Louis. And St. Louis fans, at least those few who still follow the fortunes of the Browns, were due to see a lot of Nevers. First it was as official rescue artist to faltering mates. Nevers twice shone in this capacity. And then came his big chance. He again was called upon to start. Nevers was not one to cast this opportunity to the winds. Nevers "stood the Athletics on their heads" and scored a victory. Followed a game with the Red Sox. Nevers lost. at least records show he did; but it was Brownie errors that were responsible for his defeat. Mighty Tiger Hitters. By this time everyone was convinced that Never- was a prospect. With that delivery of his, a la Carl Mays. he had the enemy upset. It was hard to tell what was coming enext. Then came the greatest test for Nevers. It accurred yesterday, when was called upon to face the Tigers. The Tigers one of •the hardest hitting clubs in the big tent and Ty Cobb is not one to «permit a youngster to rest easily *while he is toiling. But when nine innings had been played. Ernie Nevers had stood the Ty Cobb and all his other test. sluggers could get but two runs. •The Browns made seven. and so Nevers gained his second major Teague victory. He has suffered Cone defeat and pitched one game. Browns' Best Prospect. And now Nevers looks like the *best pitching prospect on the Brownie payroll. Of course. he still has much to learn, but being college man, he should readily grasp the whys and wherefors. Howerer, those three home games pitched by Nevers are enough to convince anyone that he has the makings of a big league twirler. In the 27 innings Nevers twirled in his three complete tilts at home. the enemy totaled seven runs. 'Of this number four were earned. The safeties off him totaled 22. He struck out seven batters and walked half a dozen. Pretty good for an athlete who stepped directly Nevers Does It Again BROWNS. DERTOIT. AB. R H. E. AB. R. H. That cheered Ty Cobb. He started to vell: "Come on, boys; he's gone now.' But Nevers was not gone. He In came back stronger than ever. the next three rounds he pitched but nine batters. And in the eighth it was strictly an Ernie Nevers inning. Heilmann, 1923 A. L. batting champion, came first. He worked the call to 3-2 and then watched McGowan call him out on strikes. Next came Gehringer. Fle SWung at the third one and missed. Warner then was called out on strikes, to make it three in a row. That was pitching. It was Nevers' greatest, feat, and one of the best of the year in St. Louis. There were few present to appreciate Nevers' work. But his mates evidently did, for they plasted Lil Stoner good and plenty to win. Browns Win 7. Lose 10. Nevers' work was easily the out- of standing feature a poor at-home stand for the Browns. Seventeen games were played, and but seven won, for a winning percentage of .412. All because the Yankees won four in a row. After that Sisler's men were over .500, breaking even with Washington, Boston and Detroit, and taking two out of three from Philadelphia. Today is an open date. This afternoon the Browns depart for Cleveland, where they start a series tomorrow. Sisier's men will be gone until Sept. when they ocme back to finish the season.
