Jazz: New radio format to debut on 94.5 FM

JAZZ New radio format to debut on 94.5 FM From Page 1A jazz fans in mind when programming his 24-hour station. "We're hoping to appeal to the broad group of people who are not happy with what they hear on the radio," he said. While contemporary jazz will predominate during the day, night will bring a mix of the more acoustic, modern jazz. Lenamon expects to use some syndicated programming but says the station will have a local person on duty throughout the day. Don't be surprised to hear some adult alternative music thrown in, too. Lenamon said the music he's modeling for his station falls under the New Adult Contemporary umbrella of radio formats. "My little label for it is New Alternative Jazz," he said. Hibbard noted that compared to rock or country music fans, who tend to stick exclusively with one or the other, jazz listeners take in a broader range of music. "The typical jazz listener is going to be someone who experi•ments a bit more," he said. The new station will be the 11th commercial station to operate in the Waco area, as well as the first with a jazz-oriented format. Lenamon, who also operates Lone Star Safari with Loy, declined to say how much his efforts to open a station have cost them over the years, but noted the legal fees necessary to fight off rival license applicants comprised a good portion of that amount. FO KBCT will operate under a Class A license, generally given to smaller stations, and its signal will cover much of McLennan County, Lenamon said. It will broadcast out of a studio located at 4701 W. Waco Drive, two doors down from the Lenamons' Lone Star Safari. With a limited reach and a new music format for KBCT, he hopes for modest listenership numbers in the now biannual Arbitron ratent survey and says that should draw enough advertising to pay the bills. "We're certainly not going to be the No. 1 station. .. . and I have no illusions about that," he said. noted to fight comprised that under a given signal McLennan It will located doors Lone a new hopes numbers ratent should to pay to going I have said.
