Fedex plane misses runway in Philippines

Fedex plane misses runway in Philippines The two pilots escaped the wreck with only minor injuries. MANILA, Philippines (AP) - A Federal Express cargo plane overshot the runway and ran into the ocean while landing at an airport northwest of Manila, but both pilots escaped with minor injuries, officials said Monday. The MD-11 plane, which originated in Shanghai, was landing at Subic freeport shortly before midnight Sunday when it overshot the runway, said Bong Meneses, an official of the national Air Transportation Office. Subic, a former U.S. Navy base that has been converted into a special economic zone, has a small airport that Fedex uses as its Southeast Asian hub. Fedex said the two crew members evacuated the aircraft safely and were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital. Fedex said most of the plane's cargo had been damaged "and may not be salvageable."
