Times Record News NETWORK continued from Page 1A company of Prime Sports, which supplied all the programming on Sports 35, was acquired by a subsidiary of Fox Broadcasting, he said. Second, in any other market, all-sports programming would be carried only on cable, not by a local station as it has been here for eight years. "It's been an ongoing experiment that they've allowed us to carry it on a local station," D'Acosta said. Since that programming source was purchased by Fox, that arrangement has ceased and the station was told it would have to give up its all-sports feed by April 1, he said. The timing also turned out to be very good because the week of March 4 is when UPN expands to three nights a week of original programming, D'Acosta said. He said he expects UPN to add a night of new programming g a year until it is up to seven nights, just as Fox did when it was launched. And, D'Acosta said, "I believe UPN has got a better start than Fox did 10 years ago." UPN's primetime schedule will include "Star Trek: Voyager" at 7 p.m. and "Nowhere Man" at 8 p.m. on Mondays; the new show "Moesha" at 7 p.m., "Minor Adjustments" at 7:30 p.m. and a UPN special presentation, "The Paranormal Borderline" at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays; and new series "The Sentinel" at 7 p.m. and "Swift Justice" at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Primetime scheduling on the remaining nights will be movies. At 6 p.m. each weeknight and Saturday, UPN 35 will air "Star Trek: The Next Generation," which had been showing at 9 p.m. Tuesdays and 6 p.m. Saturdays on Fox 18. In its place, Fox will air the original "Star Trek" series at 5 p.m. Saturdays. And - on a note for sci-fi fans - the first airing on March 9 will be the pilot episode for the original "Star Trek," which has not been seen in this market since September 1990 and features a different captain than William Shatner as Capt. James Kirk. At 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Fox will air "Xena: Warrior Princess.' Fox 18 will move "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" into the 9 p.m. Friday time slot which had been filled by "Star Trek: Voyager." Fox will air "Babylon 5" at 9 p.m. Thursdays when "Deep Space Nine" had been showing. "Sightings" will take the place of "Nowhere Man" Sunday nights on Fox. UPN filler programming on days and nights before and after primetime will include such fare from "Cartoon Classics," "The Lonely Chef" and a fitness show to "Golden TV Greats," "Adventure Theater," "Country Music USA" and movies. "If someone attempted to build a new station in this market anymore, the cost would be prohibitive. The fact we could convert this station and become competitive in the market serves the community well," D'Acosta said. A four-letter call sign for UPN 35 will be requested, and D'Acosta said he expects it to come through within the next year. UPN and Fox will be operated out of separate rooms at the KJTL station on Call Field Road. The UPN signal will be transmitted from a separate tower rented adjacent to the KAUZ station on Seymour Highway. The Fox tower is located at Grandfield, Okla. UPN 35 is only available to a limited broadcast area in and around Wichita Falls on UHF channel 35. It is carried on Vista cable system (channel 7) in Wichita Falls, Lake Arrowhead, Archer City and Lakeside City. D'Acosta said he hopes cable companies in other area communities will carry UPN.
