Klaban's four field goals beat Michigan

Bucks Share Big Ten Title By SHERRY DINAN Sports Editor lead. A year ago, a telephone vote of the directors awarded the bowl bid to Ohio State 6-4 following the 10-10 tie at Michigan and the Buckeyes went on to bury Southern California 32-21 in the Rose Bowl. Southern California topped UCLA 34-9 yesterday to earn third straight Rose Bowl trip. The win-or-else pressure was on the Buckeyes from start to finish before a record crowd of 88,243 and a national television audience. It was the fifth record crowd of the season in Ohio Stadium. Ohio State won the toss and elected to receive, but got the ball back only to its 12 yardline. Cornelius Greene came out throwing on first down, but the pass was incomplete and two running plays lost four yards with Tom Skladany punting 45 yards to the Michigan 47. Two carries by Wolverine tailback Gordon Bell of Troy, 0. and one by Chuck Heater Tiffin gave Michigan a first down at the Ohio 42. Massillon's Dennis Franklin faded five yards back to his right and fired strike to flanker Gil Chapman, who broke an attempted tackle by Buckeye Doug Plank at the 20 and then eluded Tim at the goal line for the 42-yard touchdown. Mike Lantry added the PAT with only 3:08 gone in the game. A pass interference penalty and Archie Griffin got the Buckeye attack rolling and brief drive netted three first downs before Greene fumbled when hit from behind after linebacker yard gain Steve and Wolverine Strinko six recovered at the Michigan 26. Again the Wolverines and the 175-pound Bell came charging downfield, but stalled at the Ohio 21 when Franklin missed on a pair of passes. Lantry, however, was -perfect his 37-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead with 4:57 left in the opening period. Griffin and Greene came right back to lead another Buckeye march, this time to the Michigan 29 as the first quarter expired with Ohio State facing fourth down, but getting the wind at its back as the teams changed sides. On the first play of the second period, Klaban lofted the longest field goal of his brief career, 47 yards, to get the Buckeyes on the scoreboard. After Michigan picked up one first down, Buckeye linebacker Bruce Elia made a leaping interception of a Franklin pass and returned 10 yards to the Wolverine 44. Griffin powered the ball to the enemy 11, but the Buckeyes ran out of downs at the eight and Klaban drilled a 25-yard field goal to cut the Ohio State deficit to 10-6 with 5:50 left in the half. The Wolverines ripped right back with a drive of their own, but on a third-and-one play at the Ohio 31, Bell was slammed for a two-yard loss by cornerback Steve Luke and end Jim Cope for a two-yard loss. Lantry's field goal try from the 41 fell far short. Only 1:11 remained in the half as the Buckeyes got the ball at their 20, but it proved to be time enough. Greene kept for two and then five, Griffin got five more and Greene scooted for nine. Greene then snaked for seven vards and fired a 26-vard pass to Dave Hazel to the Michigan 26. Griffin was stopped in his tracks and the Buckeyes called for time with six seconds left. Klaban boomed his third field goal of the quarter from 43 yards out and Ohio State trailed only 10-9 at the half. Michigan took the second half kickoff, but was unable to cope with the adjusted Buckeye defense. John Anderson's first punt of the game carried only yards to the OSU 43 and Brian Baschnagel returned it nine yards to the Michigan 48. Ohio State managed one first down in moving the ball to the enemy 28 with fourth down and five yards short of a first down. Klaban trotted onto the field for what would be his final appearance: the day. From yards away, his soaring placement was good again and the Buckeyes owned their first lead of the day at 12-10 with 10:09 left in the quarter. The Wolverines were again stopped and punted to the Buckeyes, who mounted a brief COLUMBUS Ohio State's, placekicker, Tom Klaban boomed four field go Michigan 33-yard attempt in the closing seconds Saturday in Ohio Stadium to give the Buckeyes a 12-10 decision over the previously unbeaten Wolverines and a share of the Big Ten championship, but leaving the conference Rose Bowl bid up to a Sunday vote of the conference athletic directors. All 10 directors are to meet with Commissioner Wayne Duke at 10 a.m. today in Chicago to determine what Michigan was unable to wrap up on the playing field. A win or a tie would have given the Wolverines an outright title and an automatic bid, but Klaban's strong right leg gave Ohio State a chance to return to Pasadena on New Year's Day after Michigan had exploded to a 10- lead. TOM KLABAN drive before fullback Pete Johnson fumbled and Michigan middle guard Tim Davis of Warren, O. recovered at the enemy 45. Six plays later Anderson punted 33 yards to the Buckeye seven. On second down from the five, Greene fired a "bomb" from his end zone, but Baschnagel, the intended receiver, was tripped up by "Wolfman" Don Dufek at the 50, but no interference call was made and Skladany crashed a 50-yard punt with Michigan taking over at its 36 after a twoyard return. Again Michigan's offense was stalled, this time as flustricken Neil Colzie outwrestled Wolverine receiver Jim Smith for an interception of a Franklin pass at the Ohio 39. A 15-yard holding penalty kept the Buckeyes from getting an insurance drive started and Skladany punted 54 yards to the Michigan 11 with Tom Drake returning two yards before being cracked down by Ohio State's "other" Griffin-Ray. Thwarted for more than 20 minutes of the second half, Michigan got untracked with Franklin and Heater leading a charge across the 50 before the Buckeyes defense rose up and stopped the Wolverines at the 41. Lantry's field goal bid from the 49 was again far short with 6:20 to play. The Buckeyes picked up one first down and then punted to the Michigan 30. Two Franklin passes were far off their marks and sophomore tackle Nick Buonamici led a Buckeye charge to nail Franklin for a 10- yard loss the 20. Anderson then got off a 55 yard punt, which Ohio State chose to let roll uncontested its 25. With Ohio State trying to run out the clock and Michigan calling times out, the Buckeyes were again forced to punt and give the Wolverines one last shot at victory. A Franklin to Smith pass moved the ball within field goal range and Heater ran for five years to better the Michigan chances with the Wolverines taking time out with 18 seconds left and victory, an outright title and the Rose Bowl within their grasp. With all of this along with possible thoughts of a year earlier when his long field goal tries of 58 and 44 yards went astray late in the 10-10 tie, the 6- 2, 210-pound senior Lantry drove his potential winning kick to the left of the uprights, setting off Ohio State delirium and Michigan despair. Archie Griffin, adding to his Heisman Trophy credentials, topped the century mark in rushing for the 21st consecutive regular season game with 111 hard-earned yards on 25 carries to end the season with 1,620 yards. Michigan's hard-running Bell also topped the 100-yard mark with 108 yards on 25 attempts for a season total of 1,048. Each team rushed for 195 yards with Franklin hitting five of 14 passes for 96 yards with two intercepted. Greene tried only six aerials and completed three for 58 yards. But in the end, it was a 20- -old Czechoslovakian born placekicker and a strong alive, matter of second half which kept defense, hours, Ohio State's hopes for a third straight Rose Bowl trip. Sentiment, however, would seen to favor defeated Wolverines.
