Mizzou Unable Buck Defense Of Hardy Terps Ward, 180-pound guard, held line that us ushered Maryland together great defensive to : a 20-7 victory over Missouri in the Gator Bowl today. Missouri's great offense that racked up touchdown after touchdown against the football mighty last fall, ran up against the nation's third best defense. And the defense, held. last two minutes did Missouri cross the goal. By F. T. MACFEELY Writer JACKSONVILLE, Fla.. Maryland's offense was just what Coach Jim Tatum said it was--good but not nearly as great as that defense. It was an offense that had enough stuff to capitalize on three Missouri mistakes. Bob Shemonski, Maryland's leading ground gainer, swung across the goal twice on runs of 11 and six yards. Ed Modzelewski rammed three yards for the other touchdown and Bob Dean kicked two extra points. Klein, Missouri's best gainer both by land and by air, ran five yards for his team's score. John Glorioso converted. The Maryland scoring marches had to travel only 11, 22 and 15 yards. Johnidzik's pass interception and return of 25 yards set up the first. Chet Gierula and Ray Krouse smeared Missouri fumbles to open up for the other two. Krouse, usually Maryland's defensive bulwark, was outshown by Ward today. The little guard took the fancy of the press box, which voted him the most valuable player on the field. It was the fist time the honor Missouri has gone managed to a linemanie statistics with its late passing surge. Eleven good ones in 29 tries got the Big Seven team 167 yards in the air. Maryland completed only two passes, good for 16 yards, but gained 226 yards in running while its famed line was stopMizzou at an even 100. pinfe defensive team not only held Missouri, it intercepted three passes and recovered five fumbles to transfer the ball to Maryland hands. Shemonski's 72 yards in nine tries was tops on the ground for and better than Marylands could muster. Klein completed nine of 17 passes and ran 30 yards in nine tries for Missouri's best. About 20,000 fans saw the lowest scoring Gator Bowl game in the event's five-year stand. In the four previous games the two teams scored at least six touchdowns. Maryland's 20 points were the fewest ever by a winning team. It was the same score Maryland made in a tie with Georgia two years ago. Those two bowl starts have been the only ones for Maryland. Missouri has tried five times now and lost them all, Today's miss was Mizzou's second straight in the Gator Bowl, Clemson having done it last year 24-23. Maryland joins Clemson, Oklahoma and Wake Forest on the list of Gator Bowl champs. Coach Tatum figured in three good showings here. It was his Oklahoma team that won in 1946 besides his Maryland tie and victory.
