New Int. 81 Link Opens In Southwest So Southwest Times Staff Virginia a Dispatch Bureau BRISTOL-One more gap in western Virginia's Interstate 81 was filled in Friday. Five miles of the interstate, from Atkins to just east of Marion, were opened according to the Virginia Department of Highways in Bristol. Officials in Bristol expect another section, this one about eight miles long, to be opened before noon today. This one will run from Virginia 91 at Glade Spring to east of Seven Mile Ford. Opening of this eight-mile stretch on schedule will depend on the arrival of some guard rail, said Assistant District Engineer Ben Cocke. With the opening of both these sections, Interstate 81 will extend 53 miles, from the Tennessee border to just east of Atkins.
