Republicans Pick Hawks For Secretary of State Charles Hawks, Jr., Horicon business man, was nominated on the first ballot at the Republican convention Milwaukee last week to run for the office of Secretary of State on the Republican ticket this fall. Hawks was the only nominee at the convention to receive his nomination on the first ballot by such a decisive majority. Former Senator Bernard J. Gettleman, Milwaukee, and John B. Chapple, militant newspaper man and politician from Ashland, were also up for nomination. Hawks received the nomination by a large majority, getting 68 votes from Gettleman's home county. Hawks stated this that he was very much surprised the acweek, tion of the a delegates but that he has accepted the nomination and will carry his part of the campaign. He is 37 years of age and got his start in politics in the Young Republican group several years ago. He introduced the Young Republican idea in Wisconsin and has done much to make it a strong organization. He editor publisher of the "Young Republican" a campaign magazine gotten out during the campaign two years ago to create interest in the Republican movement, Hawks is an ex-service man and is now active in the Horicon Post of the American Legion. He has always been active in Legion circles and in all civic affairs. He is a member of the Dodge county Board of Supervisors from the third ward of the City of Horicon. His education was gained in the Horicon graded and high schools and at the State University. For some years he has been an active member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Horicon. Although he has not started his campaign as yet he stated that he "is opposed to the tremendous debt the present administration is loading on the younger generations, and an enthusiastic supporter of the LandonKnox ticket.' He is a member of the Republican state central committee from the second district. It was stated this week that the fatepaien will get under way immed- Secure Speakers For Picnic Here Several distinguished speakers have been engaged for the Holiday picnic to be held at Discher park here Sunday, July 26. Congressman Usher L. Burdick, of Bismark, North Dakota, and Edward E. Kennedy, national secretary of the Farmer's Union, of Kankakee, Ill., will be the leading speakers. Charles Goldamer, president of the Wisconsin Farm Holiday, will also speak as will other officials of the group. The picnic is being arranged with the cooperation of the Horicon American Legion and preparations are being made for a large number of farmers from all parts of the state. Mayor W. H. Markham stated that | approximately 10,000 farmers are expected to participate in the festivities. The picnic will be in celebration of the centennial of farming in Wisconsin and will include, in addition to the speakers, a tug of war, music, yodeling, races, playground for the children, beauty pageant, tap dancing by the local dance school pupils, band concert and a big dance as a finale. There will be a soft ball game between the Milk Pool and Holiday groups in the afternoon and the Horicon City band will play a two hour concert in the evening, starting at o'clock. The dance will be held in the pavilion with -music by Ray Meadows and his orchestra.
