Builders Plan FM Station

CHECKER Builders Plan FM Station By Russell W. Kane Sometime around the first of the year, Greater Cleveland will get its 13th FM radio station. That number could be considered unlucky, but Douglas G. Oviatt Jr. does not think so. He is secretary of Douglas G. Oviatt & Son, Inc., A which will operate WDGOFM in the Eastgate Shopping Center, SOM Center and Mayfield Roads, Mayfield Heights. Oviatt and his father are developers of large housing tracts, mostly in eastern suburbs and Geauga County. They have had no previous radio experience. Why, then, are they going into radio? seemed a logical question, so I asked Mr. Oviatt Jr. that. As a commercial venture, but with certain public service responsibilities, he answered in effect. "About a year ago, we thought of getting an AM (regular broadcast) station in Chardon," he said. "But we found that with the permit available from the FCC, we would be able only to reach about as far west as SOM Center Road. This was not enough coverage, so we investigated the possibility of an FM station." It turned out that there was a channel open here95.5 megacyles- and the Federal Communications Commission favored the Oviatt application over one for the same channel from POOR POP by GEORGE "Mom wasn't feeling well so I made the coffee this morning, dad." AVOID ACCIDENTS IN YOUR BATH TUB WITH ... A the Taliesin Broadcasting Co. of Indianapolis. Since the Oviatts were already building a twostory, $125,000 structure behind the Bailey Co. store in Eastgate, they decided to put their station there. They will have 40,000 watts of "effective radiated power," which is the way FM broadcasters describe their broadcast potency. This compares favorably with other powerful FM outlets in this area, so WDGO (the last three letters are the Oviatt initials) should cover this whole area and not just the eastern suburbs. The station will be operated on a commerical basis, with Oviatt Jr. selling advertising time. Operating the programming part of the station will be C. G. Wells, Oviatt Jr.'s brother-in-law and for 10 years the program and production director of the Far Eastern Network, our government's Asian equivalent of the Voice of America. Program emphasis will be on good music, public service programs and religious (all denominations) programming on Sunday. When they go on the air, the Oviatts will have about $35,000 in equipment, including portable equipment for doing remote broadcasts. Combining that with their building investment, one can readily see that entering even FM broadcasting requires a considerable outlay.
