Kentuck Knob, an architectural wonder

KNOB/House se is beautifully detailed From Page J4 The Hagans sold the house in 1986. The buyer was Lord Peter Palumbo, a British patron of the arts. He was touring Fallingwater with one of his daughters when he learned that a nearby Wright house was for sale. Palumbo said in a in- er terview that he hadn't thought of owning a Wright house, but he fell in love with Kentuck Knob when he saw it. Palumbo decided to open the house because he wasn't sure if his children would want to keep it and he wanted it to be preserved. Palumbo says that practical aspects of the house are one of the things he most likes about it. He calls Wright's use of space "quite brilliant." He cites the way the living and dining rooms flow together, and the way the terraces and windows integrate the interior and exterior of the house. The Palumbos, who have their main home in London, stay at Kentuck Knob several times a year. Tour guides say Lord Palumbo sometimes joins the house tours. The home bears signs of their presence: Lord Palumbo's walking sticks and hat in the foyer; family photos in the living room, the children's teddy bears in the bedrooms. Palumbo, who collects modern art and architecture, also owns the Farnsworth House in Plano, Ill., by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. That house is also open to the public. Palumbo has decorated the house and grounds with his art collection. The house is surrounded by a constantly changing sculpture garden. Inside can be found Wright designed furniture and decorative objects from other buildings, a Tiffany desk lamp, an Isamu Noguchi statue, and a Charles Rennie Mackintosh clock. The forward nature of Wright's design is demonstrated by the fact that there is little about Kentuck Knob that dates it to the 1950s. It could pass for a house de- signed this year. Palumbo says he loves the "timeless quality" of the house. Wright's appeal is that "he merged to create a distinctly American school of architecture," Waggoner says. While the current ownsits in the House of Lords, he appreciates the same thing. The house is "quintessentially American," he says. Wright, who died in 1959, had long and productive career (he designed 500 buildings). His fame is due partly to his flamboyant personality. He was a dashing figure in his later years, with flowing gray hair. His strong personality rubbed some people the wrong way, but he more often left people awestruck. A former client wrote a book on him whose subtitle is "America's Greatest Architect." But it's not just their often striking design, but the attention to practical detail and how people live and work, that make Wright's work so important. He tried to fit the house to the client. He continues to fascinate people; there are currently 131 books on him in print.
